  • Why does apple make things so difficult?

DH has thousands of pictures on his Mac. We can't actually remove them from the Mac. We've tried everything. We're actually taking his laptop in to the computer repair shop to get them put onto a disk so that I can use them in albums. I don't understand why we're having such a hard time accessing our files.

Fast forward to tonight. Because I'm a disorganized lump, I lost Andrew's graduation pictures. My mom has some that she took with her iphone. She texted them to me and I can view them perfectly on my phone. As soon as I emailed the files to myself, they come up as unreadable and they can't be accessed....so she emailed them to me from her phone. Same thing.

I feel like Apple doesn't want me to have my pictures. What are we doing wrong. Shouldn't we be able to get our pictures off of our laptop?

Are they stored in iPhoto? You may need to export them to another location.

How about if she saves them onto her computer and emails them to you? I love/hate Apple and going to the Apple Store is on my shit list in between skinning myself and rolling around in lemon juice and poking myself in the eyes repeatedly.

        Kris -

You have to export the photos from iPhoto. It's a simple process - You can select the albums you want or "all" and then export them to a new location.

As for your mom, what file format is she sending? I get photos all the time for work from people on other systems and I rarely have issues opening them? Usually they will open in Preview which can open jpg, png and gif as well as pdf.

Apple does the same thing with music. I used to only get MP3s before I got a MacBook because the iTunes library is so stupid. Music files didn't show up as music files... They were stuck in iTunes and had to be run from there. There is a way to export them also but it's all set up to force you to use apple. Most tech people I know use PCs and hate apple.

I feel your pain Kris. I have been pushed to the extreme frustration by crap like this with apple, but it gets better. I just roll my eyes when I hear, "apple.... It just works."

He tried to export them to a DVD/CD, but they won't export. He's tried everything he can think of.

Has he looked at online support forums? We export ours to CD or DVD at least twice/year to put them in the fire box and we always put the CD in DH's work PC to make sure it works.

I've exported everything to Flickr, Picasa and Dropbox - but usually just do individual shots on to thumbdrives.

I don't understand why we can't pop in a cd and export them there. He put them on the computer with my memory cards. I feel like we're moderately competent people who should be able to do this without apple support.

We are just relinquishing the computer to a shop and are letting them try.

We've had so many issues with his mac. We'll never go Apple again. :/

Is he exporting them to another folder first and then trying to burn them to a disc or trying to export directly to a disc.

It has to do with iPhoto...not just a Mac thing either. Because you are editing in the program, iPhoto stores the originals and the edits separately. What you are seeing in iPhoto is just a reference. I have to do the same thing to Lightroom files.

I'll ask him. I think he's trying to export directly.

After the files are somewhere else (I usually just use the desktop) I drag the whole folder to the disc icon and right click on the disc icon again and choose "burn"

And fWIW, I had to do some googling a few years ago to figure this out for photo shoots I delivered

So when you transfer that way it does transfer the edited photos only right? I have not worked with iPhoto much but am getting more comfortable gradually. I'm not going to lie though--- I was frustrated to tears on many times last year bc I couldn't figure it out. It wasn't as intuitive as I thought--- and I was so used to the PC way of dealing with photo files.
