  • Would you ever borrow something from your neighbor

I heard this question debated for an hour when I was listening to the radio last week. I was surprised by many of the opinions (and that this topic could lend itself to conversation) .... so I'm throwing it out there into the universe.

Would you ever borrow something from a neighbor like eggs or milk? What about something bigger, like a lawn mower.
Conversely, would you ever lend something to a neighbor.

Maybe we will all be in agreement ... or I'll lament not posting it in the debates forum. LOL

I would borrow something small from a neighbor or cup of sugar. I have done this on a few very rare occasions when I'm baking/cooking. As repayment, I always returned the item and included whatever I was baking too. I can count on one hand the number of times I've done this. I have mixed feelings about my comfort with this and it depends on the neighbor. My one nextdoor neighbor...I wouldn't hesitate if I needed to ask and I'm sure she would do the same.

Have I ever lent something? Yes. I have lent our wine opener on several occasions. Sadly, I've never gotten it back with a bottle of wine attached. LOL.

I would feel awkward about borrowing a larger item like a lawn mower/power drill though I have lent out our drill once (and got it back same day).

I would probably borrow something from a neighbor while cooking, but generally it's easier to run out to the store, or send hubby. I might borrow something else small too. I don't see any problems borrowing big stuff, but we haven't had a need yet. My parents shared a riding lawnmower with their neighbors for years.

I did loan out a bottle opener once, and we got it back, but no extras, sadly.

It's funny, I would feel more comfortable lending and borrowing big, non-consumable things. We have lent garden tools among neighbors more than once.

My next door neighbor and I borrow back and forth. I can call her at any time if I'm running late and she will take the dogs out for me (and I will do the same for her). Several times this winter when either of us would buy ice melt/salt we picked up extra for the other because it was such a pain to find it. She is the only neighbor I do this with.

We used to borrow tools, ingredients, etc (reciprocated amongst the other party). Everything was returned or replaced in a 24 hour period.

              I miss my neighbors!

I have one neighbor, 2 houses down from us, that I am absolutely comfortable doing this (and we both have done so on multiple occasions). I could also call her in the middle of the night if I needed to make an ER run with one of the kids. But, the others tend to be more aloof and not as approachable. I'd rather not borrow large items bc I wouldn't want to be responsible for any damage we may cause.

Sure, I would borrow or lend pretty much anything. We lend out our boys to help move furniture in older neighbors homes, lol.

I'm not sure what a debate would be about with this. Were did the radio discussion lead Kris?

On the radio, some people came in with borrowing being a no-no. They suggested that individuals should be organized in their own lives and not start cooking until they gather all ingredients, etc. Some people truly believed that it is rude to borrow something from someone and would never lend something to a neighbor. I was driving to the cities listening and was mesmerized by their opinions. I'm glad we're all nice people here! LOL

I'm a poor organizer myself. Usually, I just send Thomas to the store though, but I wouldn't hesitate to ask my neighbor in a pinch.

I think they intentionally let so many people on the show who were opposed to lending/borrowing to keep it interesting, but I got the impression that a lot of people weren't terribly nice neighbors from listening. I'm glad we could all live next to each other.

Umm, yes. I would absolutely lend most anything. I probably wouldn't ask any of my neighbors currently, but I have done it in past places.
