  • Getting ready for residency

I'm putting this here because I think it will span a bunch of topics!

What do we need to be thinking about/doing/preparing for right now?

DH has done most of his paperwork and licensure stuff (as far as what the program has told him). Our toddler learned the phrase "stupid shit" as he was doing the VA paperwork.

I'll be working on upping life insurance and setting up disability insurance.

We haven't gotten any benefits info from them yet...too early to ask about it?

    Step 3?

Loans. Ugh. What I can do there before graduation?

    What else?

Youre not moving but the good thing about 6 month grace period is you can get your bearing on expenses / income before deciding if or how much you pay during residency. I wouldnt think about loans until september or october.

As far as insurance are you planning to buy outside of what his program offers?

Step 3 is usually after intern year or later. Loans - depends on the type, fed loans have the 6 month grace, Perkins have 9 months, if you have others- find out when they come due. Most importantly-- have J sign the waivers for accounts that are in his name for you to deal with them.

Oo that's a good one. They are still in his name though right?

Usually, yes. Anything in DH's name he called and said "my wife handles everything, what do I need to sign to give her authorization to call/access everything?" Each company has it's own process & forms.

ETA: For example, I'm not putting my name on his student loans! DH is just signing something that authorizes the company to talk to me about his account.

Insurance should be the same as mine and LSW's, but if it is like our last two years of training, the program covers your premium.

Most of our stuff was because of moving. But they're the usual tax forms etc when they start work.

Step 3 is easiest to take during/right after intern year bc it's all medicine so the longer out you are, it's harder if you're not doing medicine every day.

Start thinking about vacation requests since he will have to put it in at the beginning of the year.

If you can, try to live on your after-loan income for the first 6 months until they kick in. That gave us a little bit of savings for when we need random house repairs or car stuff.

I didn't think about getting disability insurance through the program...should we look at this first?

You definitely should just make sure it's enough like you would any policy. DH has a small policy through work plus what we supplement.

Ryan has a small disability policy through the hospital but from what I understand those are pretty weak. We are in the process of getting more that will continue on as his salary grows. Loan stuff we waited until about 5 months in and got everything somewhat normal. Ha.

Step three was after intern year. Our life insurance is through State Farm. Ryan has 2 million on him. It terms in 30 years. Hopefully by then we will be self insuring that from that point on.

Work disability policies only last thru your term of employment though. So, post residency, they have to retake the physical, etc to get their own policies.

That's why we did ours separate even though M is covered thru work. Not a luxury everyone has though.

I hadn't considered disability insurance... is there someone I should I ask about that to see of the program offers any?

We only have 10 year term policies for life insurance. From then on we feel comfortable self insuring. Additionally, if he should pass, his loans will be discharged. I am not worried about covering the loans with insurance at this point.

Yes, if he only has federal loans they would discharge, not all private loans (or most) would. And yes, the work policies should just be extra however you will have to disclose them when you apply for additional policies.

At out residency program the day and time when benefits were explained, spouses were invited to attend. It was a 1 hour meeting I think. That was very helpful to me because HR was there to ask questions.
