Obviously every situation is different, but we live 20 minutes from my ILs and it's perfect. They're good with boundaries, though, and have never dropped in unexpectedly or anything like that. They come over to babysit and we see them a couple of times a month, but I get along well with them so it works out well. My parents live 2 hours away and I actually wish they lived closer!

We loved living 15 min away from my father. When we first moved by him, he came over once unannounced, saw my face, left and never did it again.

We will now be 2.5 hours away from my mother. Perfect distance to not drive DH crazy.

I would move someplace quiet and imaginably beautiful. Misty mountains or sandy beaches…maybe both. I'm less interested in "society" as a whole as I get older.

Here. I'd live exactly where we are. BUT as long as we are in fantasy land, I will say that in fantasy world, I'd have a summer house somewhere cool: Ireland, Michigan, Martha's Vineyard...anyplace but scorching Texas in the summer...

Texas hill country near Austin. Yep, still hoping and praying it will happen for us one of these days.
