Ever since DH graduated from med school we've had a huge influx of junk mail come to our door. Magazines, memberships, conference info, all types of insurance pitches, program flyers...it's not uncommon to get 3-5 different things a DAY. I assume this is normal, and as I'm the only person who checks the mail in the house I've stopped even opening most of this shit. Is this wrong? Should I be trying to at least open everything to make sure it's not important? Anything I should be looking out for?

B gets the same amount of junk. Every time he receives another JAMA he won't read I want to scream. Conferences, insurance, donation requests... I sort through it all just to be sure and purge from there. He doesn't even notice nor care.wife of a PGY-2 anesthesiology resident & mother of one adorable baby girl

I cannot wait until we move to our forever location - I am going to hit the junk mail with vengeance and get things cleaned up. It's such a waste of time and money and paper. "Your membership dues statement is enclosed", "A great offer for you from XXX" - I'm so over it! I was opening everything for a while, and now I know what I don't need to open and can just pitch (Guitar Center, AMA, OREF, anything "shiny" from a CC company (your bill isn't going to be in a fancy envelope!), anything addressed to my maiden name or not people who live here (like my FIL)).

The flip side of this is, I routinely pitch all of the random crap we get that comes to him that I know is junk and he won't open, but if he DARES throw away a 20% off BB&B coupon, it's ON. Regardless of the fact that I have probably 30-40 coupons already, we DO NOT THROW THOSE OUT.Wife, support system, and partner-in-crime to PGY-3 (IM) and spoiler of our 11 y/o yellow lab

I got mad at hubby for throwing those away too, WPW! I hate junk mail too. I throw away most of what we get.

I hate it too! I do open just about everything though, especially credit card offers. I shred anything that I think could maybe be used for identity theft (i.e. specifically has our name on it, especially credit card offers). It's a time consuming PITA.
The best is I also get the junk mail from the previous 3-5 occupants too! It's so frickin annoying.
BUT THERE IS HOPE!!

You can opt out of prescreened credit card offers. I did it for myself and it works. I haven't done it for DH yet, though.Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

Sadly, most of the medical-related stuff probably won't be considered "junk". Our program pays for resident memberships to at least five societies, all of which send out their own publication.
I toss everything without even looking at it. Such a waste of paper!I'm just trying to make it out alive!
