  • Getting through the winter...

OK...I know quite a few of us here are suffering from the winter blahs...causing all kinds of nuttiness to occur. (I speak for myself with the nuttiness of course ) So now I'd like to jump on the positive bandwagon...anyone have suggestions for getting through the winter doldrums?

I am trying to counter every negative thought that I have right now with a positive one.

Isn't March 21 the first day of Spring?

One year a couple of my friends and I had a "summer party" in the middle of winter. It was a horrible winter, lots of snow and we planned a beach party. We rented Beach movies "Frankie & Annette", had Jimmy Buffet music, made Margaritas, put on our swimsuits and turned up the heat in the house and made a huge fire in the fireplace. We put on Suntan lotion (for the smell) and put beach towels in front of the fire place.

It really was fun and my daughters (about 8 & 10) at the time, joined in and had a blast.

Oh sure, NOW you want to be positive about winter!

I started working out (mostly because the thought of having to wear a plus-size wedding dress is very depressing). It really is weirdly effective as a mood regulator. It makes that one hour a day awful, but it makes the other 23 hours surprisingly better.

I know, Julie...NOW it's desperation. I have simply decided that I can not survive another potential 2 months of this weather with my current attitude

I'm seriously going to have a party!

A friend of mine here and I got together yesterday. She has 3 chidren and her husband is in Bosnia right now. We decided that we were going to buy a night in a suite at the Holiday Inn nearby...they have several pools, etc....Then the kids could play all day and swim and have fun and we could sit back and relax...my own hubby would have to stay home...but that's ok

My parents always did the hotel idea when my brother and I were young. We had a blast swimming and running around. At that age just staying at a hotel is great fun.

Now I am trying to fight the blahs by planning a summer trip with my family. My husband can't go, but I seem to feel a bit better knowing its coming. I have also been buying seeds and planning a garden. Its fun to think about and the fact that stores already have their gardening things out also brings in the warmth of summer.

I'm the first to admit that I struggle with S.A.D., especially since moving to Minne-snow-da. My solution is not what Suzee Orman would recommend, but it is a sanity saver to me. I plan our vacation to somewhere warm (Disney in April). I also have a girls' weekend with my best friend in Orange County coming up in two weeks. This helps me get through the seasonal blues but brings on a new type of worry: the financial blues.

The local paper always recommends going to the indoor nursery/conservatory for a hit of green and warmth. There is one located by Como Zoo here in Saint Paul. Next time your in town, let's go.

At this point, I have no positive thoughts. I am so stinkin' sick of winter right now. We have gotten a ton of snow this year and it has been bitterly cold. (I will admit that it has not gotten as cold as Minnesota, thank goodness!!)

Tomorrow we are having a heat wave - should hit a high of 39 degrees. Time to get my shorts out!! 8)

Have you guys gotten any relief over the last week? In KC, we've experienced quite a warm-up (not to rub it in!)--I'm hoping you guys are noticing a warming trend as well!

I'm afraid I fall deeply into the I HATE WINTER attitude right now. I got excited about reading the threds with the party idea, and then got tired just thinking about having to get the kids bundled up to go outside and get all of the things for the party, so I put on an extra layer of clothes and got deeper into my "winter blues".

Since dh is on a crazy rotation right now, it is just me with the kids - so we are all about ready to climb the walls. I tried to get them signed up for swimming lesson, which starts next week. I was all excited when I called, but was then informed that I had to have one adult per child in the water (just a pre-swimming class), so I was back to my "what do I do in the house for 12 hours with 18 month olds?!" bad attitude.

We did have a heat wave come through for about 6 hours a couple of days ago - it got up to 45 degrees! I got the kids and went outside for a LONG walk. On the way back to the house, they wanted to get out of the stroller and walk. Sarah took about 3 steps and biffed it, started crying. Seth took a few more steps and did a face plant right into the concrete. So I finished the walk holding two crying kids and trying to push the double stroller . I just can't seem to win!

Well, I better get going - it's gotten a little too quiet in the other room with the kids .
