I know we've talked about this before on here, but it am too lazy to do an in-depth search. DD12 is beggggggggggging for Instagram. I am trying to argue my no points with her, and she comes right back with a counter. She's wearing me down. So, I need a one-word response from the iMSN collective: allow my middle-schooler to have Instagram, yes or no?

Yes, let her have one. She needs to learn the ins and outs of social media. You should also have an Instagram and follow her and also know her login. She's a great kid, I think she has shown she can be responsible and will do fine with Instagram.Tara

I second Pollyanna. She's got a good head on her shoulders so I'm sure she won't be using it for bad things and she won't get sucked into it either. It's just a different world for them and a way to communicate (if you can use that word for social media) and stay connected that I don't think we can relate to as much.

My 12 year old has one. I monitor it. She looks at it a lot, but doesn't post much. Things have been fine so far. I have known people who children have been bullied through Instagram. DD's middle school principal call Instagram "the devil". I am fine with it for DD12. But DD10 doesn't get to have one because she is irresponsible with the outlet. So I think it depends on the kid.Needs

Let her have it. My boys (including my youngest) have accounts, as do I. Make sure she makes her account private, check what she posts, and I think she will be fine.Wife of an OB/Gyn, mom to three boys, middle school choir teacher.

instagram is the new social media workaround for peeps who don't want to be monitored on FB.
DS has one and I have seen otherwise great kids post some really questionable stuff. The good news is that at least she's asking you to do it instead of creating a secret account. (small consolation right?)

Both my kids are Redditors. They thoroughly reject Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. I've seen it cause trouble. I would monitor as well. The texting and Instagram life that starts out innocently at 12 can get more dangerous at 15, and kids can rebel. Once you give them the account, it is harder to take away. (Although you can - you always CAN pull the plug. We often forget that.) One mom I know found 45 unsolicited messages from unknown adult men to her teen daughter in one week of monitoring her accounts.
So....be careful.Angie

My sister has one and she's 12. My mom logs in to see what she's posting and I can see too. She mostly posts about gymnastics and regrams nastia lukin. All about monitoring. My sister got her acct after keeping her room clean for a month. If she lapses she looses Facebook IG and some game she always plays. My mom would totally go in and delete it all without a second thought. She can't yank her phone because we pay for it and I'm so not getting in the middle of that!! Hahasigpic
