  • Paging Dr. Google

    http://www.startribune.com/business/258540431.html

Interesting article about a new on line service called CrowdMed. "Send your symptoms and a nominal fee to CrowdMed.com, and dozens of medical professionals, students and average Joes will “crowdsource” — that is, share their knowledge and expertise — to help diagnose what’s wrong with you." What do you think? Is this good for medicine?

It could be good, yet I fear it will give many laypeople a sense of equal knowledge with those who have the degree under their belt.

My husband already deals with people on a weekly basis who argue about their diagnosis, treatment, medication options, etc.

I suspect, while intended as a helpful tool, this site will only further this problem.

It sounds dangerous to me. The hardest part of my day is convincing my patients they DO NOT need an antibiotic, and I have a feeling this site will make that even more difficult.

Orrrrr my friend could chime in and educate your patients about how ALL antibiotics are evil as well as vaccines. . Yes, she seriously believes this based on her "research" - dont get me started.

Speaking of Jenny McCarthy (who now says she was never opposed to vaccination), did you hear that polio is back?

I'm sure essential oils can cure all your medical woes. 😂 No need for that website.

That would make a mess if used for an ear ache. Or yeast infection.😯

Everyone knows you place a few cloves of peeled garlic into your vagina to clear up a yeast infection! Gosh!

personally i think it's a great idea. do you own research. 99% of the doctors don't spend more than 10 minutes--probably only 5 minutes talking to the patients. the rest of time, they're doing other stuff. i really wish the doctor would take the time to explain the diagnosis. of course, time is money--and they don't get pay to spend time on the patient.

Horrible idea for almost everyone. I can see how it could be useful for rare diseases, but not for most issues.

Ugh. I venture to another busy board where people are always posting their medical problems and getting the stupidest advice from laypeople. Any MD, PA, NP, or RN with half a brain would NEVER answer a question or offer a diagnosis based on symptoms someone posted online, so you'll get a bunch of half-brained people convinced that everyone has what their cousin or aunt had and offering terrible advice. I can't think of a worse idea.
