    World Health Org: Polio

    The World Health Organization has declared that the recent spread of Polio is a International Emergency. How scary is this? This makes me really nervous with the anti-vaccination movement that has become popular in the US.

      They're all coming back. Pertussis, measles, mumps, polio. The antivax movement isn't isolated to the US either.

      I get a lot of questions, so I keep up on my public health data. An MPH isn't worth much if I don't keep current. It's so depressing though. Just last week yet another person asked me about how MMR causes autism. *bangs head*

        Yep! Very scary!!

        My mom talks of listening to the radio on the farm and there would be a nightly reading of names of children that died from polio...her older sister came down with polio and amazingly lived but still suffers from it's effects at 80. People have no understanding or concept of how bad all these illnesses are.

          I just had the talk with my teens. The people are nuts and afraid for illogical reasons and if we don't think logically all these damn diseases are going to come back talk. I'm hoping that at least they spread the word. Maybe we should starts pro-science campaign. Seriously, maybe we should. It could be iMSN's charitable/public outreach.

          I propose "Spread The Word, Not The Germs" mothers for science based parenting program. Vaccination, creationism in schools, GMO fears, even stranger-danger run amock .so many things are based in emotional reactions and fear based parenting.

          Crazy world we live in.

            It's funny, though, Angie. I read a study that showed that pro-science/vaccination articles do not help. If anything, they lend credibility to the bullshit. It makes me sad.

                    I once got into an intense discussion on FB where I asked what she would do if her son contracted polio and she replied she would take him to the ER and he'd be treated by a doctor. My point that there was no treatment for polio fell on deaf ears.

                      Irony: not vaccinating your children, and then expecting a physician to "do something about it" once a disease is contracted, and the child is symptomatic.

                      Sometimes... I just want to say, "Selectively picking and choosing what you want to believe, in regards to medicine, just isn't going to work."

                          Heidi, thanks for the link.
                          I feel like it's a public health issue and states need to make it harder to not vax.
                          DH's uncle died last year after being wheelchair bound most of his life from polio. It's terrifying to think that it might come back.

                              My heart hurts for the children who's parents are making choices not to vaccinate them and the people who cannot be vaccinated because of other conditions (compromised immune system, etc.). I just wish it was adults who decided to go unvaccinated. I don't like that people are experimenting on their own kids.

                              That all being said, I have a feeling that it won't take many US polio deaths to get people back on the bandwagon.
