  • Mid-level/Physician Extender/Other Terms for Non-MD Providers

What is the appropriate term to use when referring to non-RN, non-physician providers (PAs, NPs, etc)? I realize that requirements/ability to operate independently varies somewhat by state, is there a generally accepted term? Obviously when referring to a specific person, you will use their exact designation but is there a way to group together these providers in general conversation?

I've heard the words "mid-level" and "physician-extender" but in some ways those seem pejorative since they reference some other provider or "higher level" provider.

I've only heard the term "mid-level" used and never as a pejorative because there is a higher level provider they're required to be overseen by.

I've heard it described as insulting because for example, a PA in a primary care or urgent care setting is supposed to be delivering the same level of care as an MD.

In my last pregnancy, I never knew what to call my midwife when people would ask who she was. Like, now I'd say "Dr. Smith" or "Nurse Jones," but it sounds weird to say "My midwife is Midwife Smith" or "My PA is PA Jones."
In these kind of cases, do you just refer to people by their first and last names?

I agree OG! These people have a masters or higher degree and are often simply referred to by their first name while everyone else is "Dr so and so", "Nurse so and so"....it felt wrong.

APP makes sense, I like that. Although it's not super common yet, it seems.
