  • Ear Piercing

I think I'm finally going to get my ears pierced.

Anyone have any advice or recommendations? I don't really want to Claires, so I think I'm going to go to an actual piercing parlor that hopefully knows what they are doing.

How long after I get them pierced can I swim?

Why not Claire's? They honestly probably have much more ear piercing experience than a parlor.

As far as swimming, I think they recommend 2-3 weeks.

I've heard it is better to not use a gun?

I dunno...just not totally on board with the idea of a teen with minimal training doing it. Believe it or not, I think some of the piercing studios might be better hygiene wise.

Don't go to Claire's. You're right that a piercing parlor is better. They will use a hollow needle, so instead of just puncturing the earlobe (with a gun, which is so so easy to get off-kilter...) they will remove a small core of flesh (disgusting, I know), which (apparently?) makes it less likely that your ear will heal funny. I have several keloid scars in my ears from bad piercing... my third set of holes was re-pierced a second time (third for one of the holes) with a hollow needle because scars were forming and pushing the earrings off in funny directions. I eventually gave up on those and let them close. I wish I'd done them in a piercing parlor the first time but hey, I was a dumb teenager. I don't remember swimming being an issue, but it's been 20 years. Just clean them with Bactine/Hibiclens and use Bacitracin.

If you have it done well, it will just hurt for a couple minutes and will heal up without issue... So don't be worried by my story!

Apparently a dermatology office in the next town over does them. That might be the best bet for being sure it is hygienic.

            Ear Piercing

Find someone that is certified with the APP, and go check out their piercing parlor.
Do NOT do it at the mall, or Claire's. A professional piercer with a great reputation and a sterile studio is what you want.

Just out of curiosity... What's making you think about getting them pierced now? (I've had mine since I was 4, so just interested in what finally made you decide to - cute pair of earrings?)

We took E to Claire's when she was 2 months old. An adult did it. She had been piercing ears for years. My sister took my niece to the ped to have it done. They don't do it often and the gun got stuck on her ear. Terrifying! M was done the old country (Panama) way — sterilized needle and thread.

I think Michele took P to a tattoo/piercing placing place in Dallas. I would do that before going to a doctor's office.

Well yeah, if a Dr's office is using a gun to do it, don't do that either!!

I dunno...just decided it was time. I didn't really have much interest before. I'm getting more into jewelry now, but I'm not much of a jewelry person in general. Also, my mom had horrible issues with hers and that always dissuaded me, but in the past few years my sisters have gotten theirs pierced and my mom got hers repierced and haven't had problems.

I also didn't want my ears to get droopy, but I figure if I don't wear heavy stuff that's a non-issue.

I'm about to get a mom haircut...I think some nice pearl studs will compliment it well

It wasn't a tattoo place. Just an earring place and the old lady who pierced P had been doing it for over 30 years or something. I wish we could remember the name or something other than "near Restoration Hardware" for you.

I just Googled and I'm pretty sure it was La Lobe in Dallas.

I took my friend to get hers done when she was 30 - it's never too late! We just went to Claire's though. I got my first ear piercing when I was a baby, my 2nd at Claire's in 7th grade, cartilage at Claire's my junior year of HS, and belly button my senior year at a tattoo place.
