I was listing out all our expenses last night to crest a budget and it is crazy how much it costs for me to work. $2-300 in gas, $50 in tolls, about $1500 in child care.Makes me feel better about quitting when we get some big ticket items paid off!

We are also lucky to have a well paid program in a relative low cost of living area. And if they pay insurance premiums )don't know yet) I will jump for joy!!

Moonlighting would be a big help - not allowed here. Do any surgery programs allow moonlighting?

Compared to where we could have matched, I'm gonna call it low.

I mean, we could always move to more questionable areas of the city. One of our residents shares a $500/month apartment with her fiancé. She may or may not be insane.

do they ride a fixed speed and brew their own kombucha?

T&S - with residency hours being restricted further and further, I think it's getting tough for many specialties to moonlight. DH did on his vacation weeks and research month, but often couldn't due to hours restrictions that were 80 hours when he was off service and 60 hours for his ED months. It was great bonus money, but the bulk of our funds came from my job. His schedule didn't often allow for moonlighting on top of that without violating the hours rules.

DH has moonlighting built into his OBGYN program though apparently a lot of wives wouldn't consider his specialty surgery. He works ALOT but at least he gets paid extra for it. A friend's general surgery resident husband moonlighted at a nursing home as the doctor on night or weekend call.

DH's program specifically prohibits it (and gen surg does here too). I'm not sure on Ob/Gyn, Ortho, etc.

DH's program allows moonlighting during 5th year, with special permission from the program coordinator, but only 3 out of 5 residents get to do it each year so it's sort of on the DL.

Moonlighting is prohibited for my DH's program as well.

Damn, this whole time I thought moonlighting was one of the few perks we could look forward to - a relatively no-frills way to earn some extra cash. Seems natural at this juncture that this is yet another thing that won't be available to us. I get more and more thankful he chose medicine every day .

Moonlighting is typically not a given. We were lucky in that the program DH really liked, in our chosen city, had moonlighting built into the actual program. I'm not gonna lie, he makes a ton of money because of it. But it is very unusual and not built into the other specialties at his hospital.

Our programs allowed it but we couldn't because of our FMG status and we would need a full medical license. We have a full license in PA, but I can't find any work there for DH.

It seems pretty specialty dependent. About 85% of the programs DH interviewed at had something set up PGY3-5. Some had it built into call (UPMC), others were gigs babysitting a scanner, some were weekend gigs in a rural area. Oklahoma had the best... People doubled salaries there and the gig was so good attendings would do it too. Mississippi is supposed to have the best of all rads programs , but it's Mississippi!

Im not sure if its available but have noooo idea when he'd have time. He's at the hospital AT LEAST 12 hrs a day in addition to call nights and days off are spent sleeping and catching up on reading / research

It hasn't been allowed but may be next year...but it's a grand for the license...no idea on the availability though...
