I thought this was fake when I first saw it on Facebook. I just cant comprehend it. What the hell were they thinking? Mental illness? How can a child willing try and murder another child like that?

I guess you really do have to monitor all internet usage of your children. I wonder if there were other behavior problems or signs of violence.

I read other reports that said one of the perpetrators showed signs of mental illness prior to this incident.

It must be a nightmare for a parent trying to figure out how to help a child with such terrible mental illness. I can't imagine it. I don't even want to think about it.

The girl has been quoted as saying, "it's really weird, I have no remorse". There's obviously some type of severe pathology there, I'm not sure the internet has much to do with it. (Although I agree in theory, ML, that you should monitor internet usage).

Something like this happened at my former middle school. A kid jumped his friend in the restroom and stabbed him to death. It was horrible and shocking.

I am am torn about this. On one hand, she is so young that treating her like an adult in the eyes of court doesn't seem right, particularly as she will have access to better mental health services as a juvenile. On the other hand, I have a hard time believing that any kind of remediation is going to work and that this person will ever become a productive member of society. By age 12, social norming should have made the thought of murdering your "friend" unthinkable. If her thoughts are so broken, I don't know that is even possible for her to be out in society unsupervised. Ever.

I'm so relived that I can't be picked for that jury.

                  I couldn't agree more.
I think this child should have never been in public to begin with. Clearly she needed to be in a inpatient treatment center. I just wonder if that's something her parents considered.

There aren't a lot of in-patient mental health beds for pre-teens. Hell, there aren't a lot for teens.

But it would have saved a life if they could have put her somewhere secure. Clearly she was at risk and needed treatment. It seems so senseless. I guess all of these crimes seem that way. I guess it will take years to really hear the details though.

Yeah, very hard to get in patient care for a preteen.

I'm not getting that she was clearly a risk from anything I read. Who really ever guesses a child is going to murder a friend because of an online character?

Also there were 2 of them. I'm not sure who was the instigator

I really struggle with these stories. They can become intrusive thoughts and visions that circle in my mind. I don't process them like normal people. I try to remember the bazillion untold stories of friends helping each other and people they don't even know.

lots criminal has mental illness--the problem is, there's no cure. chances are high, she'll commit another murder--and blame it on something else she seen--if she's not lockup.
