We weren't married yet, but I know my husband's med school was easier on him than residency. He fell into the category of "lazy med student"--we were friends during first and second year and I saw him and his buddies at the bars ALL THE TIME! I'm sure he studied at some point as well, but even on week nights they would go out. Also, he lifted weights two times a day and didn't necessarily always go to class. They had something called "John's Notes"--apparently they would take turns attending lectures and taking notes and they would pay to be in the system so they didn't have to make it to every class. 3rd and 4th year were tougher because he was doing clinical rotations. Then intern year was the toughest year of all.

just being a pain, couldn't resist!

Not a pain, but, rather, a humorous interlude? :P

To answer the question, "Which is harder for the spouse: med school or residency?" I would have to say medical school was MUCH harder for me financially, physically, and psychologically.

Bear in mind, however, that my husband is in a very family-friendly specialty in a very humanizing program.
