My high school boasts the voice of Bart Simpson and professional skateboarder/reality tv actor Rob Dyrdek amongst its most successful graduates.

    Yeah. Soooo proud. LOL.

The homogenous Mormon culture. It was in everything. Culture, government, school, socialization. Everything. You have a conversation? It's about the ward or stake center or conference or priesthood or missions. You have a party? You serve punch or orange soda or sprite or other non-caffeinated beverages. No alcohol. You can only, in fact, buy alcohol at one of the few state-run liquor stores with very limited hours. In public school, people had seminary as one of their electives. There are literally more mormon churches than McDonalds and 7-11's combined. It seeped into everything. It's just bizarre.

The obsession with truck lifts and big tires. "Mudding" is a frequented past-time, and it's not limited to any particular socioeconomic status.
Even the rich kids have lift kits on their super expensive toys, and go on the weekends.

The strange thing about my hometown was that it was as big as the whole state of Rhode Island, but had only 250 thousand people and no buildings taller than about 5 stories.

What's the strangest thing about where you grew up?

I grew up in arkansas. Very southern very conservative. I think we had one African american family that I went to school with. No Indian, no Hispanic, No other religion other than southern baptist. Everyone is a republican. Dh and I were very sheltered. I grew up around insanely rich families (private jets,Private islands) and dh grew up in the trailer park.

It is funny how dh and I are very liberal , atheist, and like being In a diverse population and come from very different social economic backgrounds.

We had "drive your tractor to school day", and snowmobile parking at the high school.

Our county had a sort of isolated group of watermen who spoke a different dialect from the rest of the county. They were their own community unto themselves, mostly comprised of half dozen or so large families that everyone in the county knew. People aren't really sure historically why they have a different dialect, where they came from, or how they got their nickname.

Its complete and utter love of mediocrity. From arena football to the rich/popular families' obsession with shopping at the Gap and carrying Coach logo purses, everything that people loved was just so... average.

Sadly, our claim to fame is The World's Largest 6-Pack. Is it any wonder there is a binge drinking problem here?

The town was renamed after the Pullman train car in hopes of getting money. It didn't work. The towns population is 1/6 the size of the university population. The nearest mall is in another state. There is a yearly pea and lentil festival. There are many strange things about where I lived from 10-18.

My hometown is really only known for the crazy motocross track that hosts the national championships every year. I grew up with a bunch of world class MXers and adrenaline junkies. Made for an interesting adolescence.

I can't think of anything weird but Tucson can boast the longest non-motorized parade in the world. It's our rodeo parade and schools still close for two days in February for rodeo vacation.
