The good news is that they were able to get my door open, pull out the lock mechanism and apply a self-created fix instead of ordering a new mechanism for over $300. Yay, right?
Wrong. The bad news is that the check engine light when on. Some cam indicator of some sort that I don't understand. We got it replaced but he warned us that in VWs often the problem is not the cam, but a drive chain or something (which is extremely expensive to fix). Anyway, I drove away from the mechanic and got all the way to Minneapolis and my check engine light went back on. I dropped my baby back off at the mechanic yesterday. He told me to prepare for a burial.
Here's the problem. Now the money we have been setting aside for Andrew's dorms ... would have to go to get me a replacement vehicle. I have been searching for $5000 vehicles for myself to keep him back in the dorms. DH was on board at first but then reminded me that any of the used cars with more miles come without warranties and likely will mean jumping into costly repairs all over again. He found me a 24,000 Routan with 7000 miles on it and wants to get that. With the down payment and monthly payments, we won't be able to get Andrew back into the dorms.
I've offered to drive Amanda's car, but she gets her license (hopefully) in 2.5 weeks and will then be driving herself to school and work. I like the option of her driving herself because I'm sort of exhausted by picking her up after midnight and then getting to sleep so late/getting up early to get little ones out the door.
I'm so super bummed.
Send iMSN mojo that the problem is something fixable and not terribly expensive. Or start mailing me lottery tickets. This year has been a financial cluster. Worst since ending fellowship. Damn.~Mom of 5, married to an ID doc

So frustrating to know exactly what your mechanic is telling you and be too far away to help.
New sensor excellent, chain timed engines really strong but rely on regular oil changes. Engines stronger than electrical systems....but mechanics understand engines not electrical systems!
Don't condemn it yet! Fingers crossed,
