  • Ebola? Schmebola

So, this is now what we're hearing about around here:
    http://700childrens.nationwidechildr...terovirus-d68/

This, however, is much more disturbing (to me):

Maybe I should just put things like this in Debates, but...

This reminds me so much of Newsies... It's shameful what they'll say for ratings.

Yeah, at first it read to me like someone googled enterovirus, learned that it shares a name (genus) with polio, and went all scare-mongery. But...five cases of permanent paralysis? And some of the kids tested positive for the D68 strain? Yeepers.

There's been confirmed Enterovirus 68 in my state, and after <3 days incubation (presuming she got it at kindergarten like her classmate who got sick the same day) DD came down with an upper respiratory illness that went straight to croupy congestion. We think there's a good chance she had/has it (she's still recovering).

Enterovirus is going around here, 400+ cases at our local children's hospital. A's had 3 out of her class this last week with it. We skipped a family baptism last night bc DH was afraid she might be carrying it even though she has no signs. Here they're saying the ones that are ending up admitted to the hospital have pre-existing asthma.

It is in our high school and in our house. So far, just a bad chest cold. Hoping that the majority of cases are just a PITA and not the zombie apocalypse.

This has me totally freaking out with my kids in at least two different preschools plus libraries, playgroups, etc. K1 is exposed to about 180 kids every day.

Enteroviruses are everywhere, all the time. If you have ever had a summer cold, then you have had an enterovirus. The only mystery to this is why kids are getting the same strain of it in different locales. It has affected kids with asthma and environmental allergies a little more seriously - wheezing and whatnot requiring more monitoring or a short stint in the hospital. The cases that have been reported so far have low hospitalization rates, like around 10%. DH hasn't seen it yet here and his hospital isn't testing for it, but are asking docs to consider it when a kid has severe respiratory illness. But if some kid comes in with the sniffles and a cough, they're not testing for it. In most of the healthy, normal kid population, the illness will be mild and NOT require trips to the ED or a stay in the hospital.

I'm hoping I already had it in May. DH brought home a nasty chest cold from the children's hospital. Even with steroids it wouldn't go away and was turning into pnemonia (I have asthma and am prone to pnemonia because I got it at six weeks old). An antibiotic finally got rid of it for me. I'm really hoping that was it because I don't want to get another chest cold/asthma flare up so soon after that one.

Now you got me thinking. ...Lambie and I both had a cold a few weeks ago. The pediatrician was not at all concerned.

I should have said the 68 strain is going around here. A said all of her classmates were there today so hopefully we've passed the worst!

The "connection" between this strain and the sudden onset permanent paralysis happening in CA (I think there's 20 documented cases now?) made me say "What?!"

I'm not sure if it's correlative or causal, so I'm not panicky or anything, but the news people in LA sure as hell are. *sigh*

I'm wondering if the presence of Enterovirus 68 in those kids in CA is just a coincidence. The paralysis part is scary. Hoping no one else gets that sick.
