  • What's your "work language"

Please tell me someone else is also surrounded by meaningless jargon whether that's in an office or with your kids:

    I cannot STAND:
    boil the ocrean
    net-net
    get a quick pulse
    incentivize
    low hanging fruit
    from this juncture
    leverage yourself/the resources/ the data
going forward (like instead of going backward???)
    spin your wheels
    back of the envelope
    get granular
    bandwidth
    synergize
    out of pocket
    take ownership
    black box
    boilerplate
Married to a Urology Attending! (that is an understated exclamation point)
Mama to C (Jan 2012), D (Nov 2013), and R (April 2016). Consulting and homeschooling are my day jobs.

            What's your "work language"

Resources, bandwidth, and low hanging fruit come up a lot here

            "This needs to be escalated"

            "In the ditch"

            "Innovate"

            "Pull in/push out"

            "Center of excellence"=overseas cheap workers

And my favorite "what's the priority on this?" "Is this my top priority" "we need to talk about priorities" "what the f are the priorities?!"

Oh and a shit ton of acronyms that mean nothing to anyone outside our company

These pertain to a prior workplace, of course.

Ok, I've taken a lot of music lessons, and I have no idea what this means!

The one that annoys me most here is stakeholders. "We've met with all the stakeholders." "All the stakeholders have signed on to this plan." "I'm worried we haven't heard from enough stakeholders."

From our old principal, who resigned this past summer (thank God!)

We're building the plane in the air.
                          That being said, .....
                          Shareholder satisfaction
                          ....with fidelity

What I hear in my classroom:
                          What are we doing today?
(It is always, *always*, on the board)
                          My folder isn't there.
                          I can't find my folder.

What I say too often in my classroom:
                          Self-control, please.
                          Ladies and gentlemen....
                          Check your posture.
                          Tall mouths, please.
                          Where should you be looking?
                          Sit tall.

It's when you turn on a continuous note, usually the tonic for whatever key you're in, and tune each note to it. I have little patience when students don't practice the way I tell them.
