  • Weird, right?

A friend posted an album of pictures on facebook with her daughter wearing a "Big Sister" dress and reading "I'm a New Big Sister" to announce her new pregnancy. As far as I can tell, the pictures were taken by a photographer (good exposure, bokeh, composition), and my guess is that it's a mutual friend who works professionally, although they're not credited at all. Another mutual friend of ours, who also works professionally, took one of the pictures off of facebook and posted that she loved that pic so much that she edited it for her, and if the friend wanted to send her the full size file, she'd edit that. She posted the edited picture, and I honestly think it looks awful, but it's just not my style of photography (very whimsical compared to the clean edit on the original). I think I'd be a little bit offended if someone took pictures that I posted and edited them without my asking. Does anybody else think that's weird?

I think it would be a nice surprise for someone if you tried to give them a gift of a special picture, but to post it publicly is the weird part for me. If I was to try and give someone a gift like that I would privately contact them.

Hopefully they had a conversation about it. "I'm really not happy with how the pictures came out" or something to that effect. Otherwise I'd be peeved.

That's really weird. I'm of the mindset that you don't take anyone's pictures off of facebook and do anything or post them as your own... "re-sharing" is bad enough. I warned my mom about this when she wanted to save my brother's wedding pictures to her computer and possibly post one on her own account... Obviously your everyday user probably doesn't care, but some professionals would be very offended and would consider it copyright violation, especially it not properly credited.

I don't think they're that good of friends. We were all in a sorority together and are facebook friends, but none of us were super close. The conversation came across like this was the first they'd talked about it.

The original friend responded with "That's sweet, thanks!" and didn't mention that she'd send the original file.

Very weird. I try to assume people have the best intentions, but there is no way in hell I would ever do that. Like ever, ever.

I love editing photos (well, my own photos) but I would never ever be ballsy enough to do that...and I'd be pissed if someone edited mine!

                  Some photographers specifically prohibit it
