  • Are you a fruit tester?

You go into the grocery store and notice that they have a bunch of grapes again. Do you

    1. Buy them and hope for the best

    or

    2. Test 1 to make sure they taste alright

I'm a tester. I hate buying new fruit, getting it home, and discovering it is sour or tasteless. I only test one of course, but I don't consider it abnormal at all. My mom was a tester too. One grape. Then you know.

I did this last night at the grocery store and got a super crazy look from a fellow shopper. It occurred to me that not everyone is a taster .... Grapes are the only fruit I taste, btw.

The food science course I took in undergrad keeps me from being a taster, lol. Our Plubix encourages you to bring back any fruit you find unacceptable, no questions asked. They will also give you a clean sample if you ask.

I didn't think of that Tara. Ugh. Maybe I'll start asking for clean samples.

Unless it's offered as a sample or washed and provided to me, I never taste anything in the store. I've always felt it was a form of stealing (because you pay by weight and you never actually pay for what you've eaten). Also- the micro background certainly helps. Some people take sampling WAY too far, I've seen people grab a banana off the bunch and eat it while shopping (obv not directed at you PF). It's a bit of a pet peeve for me while shopping. All of our grocery stores will take things back if they're unacceptable.

I'm highly unlikely to put crap back into a bag and drive back to the store to complain about the quality of my fruit. It's a huge imposition.

I love when they put samples out of oranges etc because you actually can sample them. There is nothing worse than getting home and realizing the oranges you bought are completely dry and pulpy inside.

I'm not sure why, but I've always only sampled grapes...and only 1, because the weight of a single grape is negligible. I'd be happy to pay for those couple of grams though.

I buy and hope for the best. Someone sampling one grape? Not even on my radar as odd. A lot of people do that.

I always taste grapes. If they're tart my kids won't eat them and it's a waste of money. I've tasted blueberries. Strawberries I eyeball or use in other cooking if the kids don't like them. My kids are big berry eaters and they aren't cheap.

I don't, but I should because I literally just threw out a huge bag yesterday because even though they were labeled as seedless, they weren't. Everyone in my house refused to eat them so I threw them. I might have taken them back had I had the original bag they came in, but I had already cleaned them and put them all in snack size baggies. Total waste of time and money. 😠

I don't test. I do eye my fruit to an obscene level to ensure no bruises, squishes, leaking juice, etc. though.

I don't test. I've become really spoiled living in an area with ah-mazing fresh produce choices. I also shop at a lot of farm stores where they have samples out and ready for anyone who wants them.

                          I don't, but I don't think I would judge anybody who did.

No judgement for the produce weight issue, but I just can't eat unwashed fruit. I even wash my bananas before peeling them. Ick - bugs have crawled on those! Bugs!! Also, I have a gut feeling that people who pick them probably go to the bathroom in the field with no place with running water and soap to wash their hands afterwards...
