Our refrigerator came with the house. My understanding (based on stories from the cleaning lady who cleaned for the previous owners, and on how pissed the owners were when they uninentionally agreed to leave it) is that it is relatively new. In March, I had it repaired when the freezer stopped freezing - supposedly there was a freon leak, so the guy stopped the leak and recharged the unit, and it was working great again. We had a home warranty that we got with the house, so I only had to pay the deductible. Well, it's not working again. I called the original guy who repaired it directly, since we don't have the warranty anymore. He's not answering or returning my calls. I called another guy on the recommendation of a friend, and he says he doesn't do freon leaks, that we need a specialist, and it's likely to keep happening. Plus, I think it's going to be expensive. It's not a super fancy refrigerator, and it's honestly too big for the space (though I'd hate to lose inside space). I'm thinking we could potentially put that one in the garage as a beer fridge and replace it with a counter-depth refrigerator. Would you try to fix it, or just buy a new one? We have money in savings that we could use.

I'd replace with a counter-depth. It is amazing how much space the improper sized refrigerator takes up. The guy we bought our house from had a huge-ass frig and it made the kitchen look much smaller than it really is. He left it and we moved it to the garage and bought a counter depth Frigidaire side by side. It's in their Gallery line so it has the stainless steel that doesn't leave finger prints. So awesome!!! We paid about $1400 for it. I like it just fine. I mean, it's a frig, doesn't have to be fancy IMO. The one that was left was a fancy one with the freezer on the bottom and the french doors. I'm thrilled not to have to use that everyday. I always wanted one but now using it just in the garage I am so glad not to have to deal with it on a daily basis. I find the side by side to be more convenient and plenty big (and that's for a family of 8).Tara

We definitely want a side by side, preferably a smudge free stainless, so it's just a matter of deciding which one. We may go look this weekend. The frigidaire looked nice, but my mom was saying she didn't like those for some reason. I ended up buying a new one yesterday with the Veterans Day sales, plus my parents get 10% off with a military discount. I really liked the smudge proof coating on the Frigidaire, but the Samsung was so much nicer in every way, so in the end I went with that one (plus the cleaning lady will clean the smudges off!): http://www.lowes.com/pd_568253-149-R...0steel|Samsung
It gets delivered today!!Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

Continuing the saga from the daily news thread...
My conversation with the Samsung rep online so far:
Samson: Hi, thank you for reaching out to Samsung technical support. How may I assist you?
Visitor: We bought a new Samsung refrigerator a week and a half ago, and we discovered this morning after a brief power outage that the refrigerator goes into demo mode when it starts back up. Since the power outage happened overnight, everything in our freezer was melted by the time we woke up. This is absolutely ridiculous - is there any way to prevent this from happening?
Samson: I see that you have sent me quite a bit of information. I’d be happy to go through it and assist you better.
Samson: I understand that you want to prevent the demo mode on your unit. Is that correct?
Visitor: Yes
Samson: The demo mode is not done by a power outage it will happen only when you press any button on your unit.
Visitor: We didn't press the buttons. It definitely happened after the power outage.
Samson: That your unit will not go automatically in a demo mode and there is no option to disable this feature permanently.
Visitor: It did - I'm not sure how else to prove it to you. I'm not the only one this has happened to, according to Google search results.
Samson: As of now there is no reported issue with your unit.
Visitor: How can I file a report?
Samson: I will take it has a feed back. We always appreciate customers who take their time out to give us their valuable feedback.
So, not helpful at all. What would you do? Return it and get a different brand? I thought about getting a UPS, but I don't think that will work. This is so frustrating. It would be one thing if it just turned off, because it would hold the cool for a while, but it completely defrosted. We got the Lowe's extended warranty, so I may call them about it tomorrow.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer

I talked to whoever manages the extended warranty with Lowe's, not the actual store. They have a 7 day refund policy, but we're obviously out of that now. They put in a special request for us to get that too, and we should hear back within 24 hours.Allison - professor; wife to a urology attending; mom to baby girl E (11/13), baby boy C (2/16), and a spoiled cat; knitter and hoarder of yarn; photographer
