Smoke alarms

Our hard wired smoke alarms went off at 5:45 this morning for no apparent reason. It took a half an hour to get them to turn off. Taking out batteries doesn't stop hard wired alarms, who knew?! Now all of our smoke alarms are in half on the kitchen counter. Hope a real fire doesn't happen before we can get them fixed.

I read that I should try to vacuum them. The batteries were all changed less than 6 months ago so that wasn't the initial problem. Of course, they need to be changed again after 30 minutes of horrid screeching. Any other ideas for a fix to this are welcome!

Only good part about this, somehow the baby slept through it all (and woke at the time he normally would - not an hour "early" due to DST)!!!

When we were selling our last house the inspector went to test our hard wired alarms and they apparently would not stop going off and he had to take some down. We ended up having an electrician come out and replace them all and do a few other things. It wasn't cheap but I think you might be able to do it yourself depending on the connection. Ours were old and they had to switch out the little plug that sticks out of the ceiling with a new type. It didn't take the guy very long and it looked pretty simple. We had to have it done by an electrician since we were selling. I might still go with a pro though just for the peace of mind that it's done right. I was really nervous for those few days they weren't working. We even went to lowes and picked up some none hard wired ones to have something while we waited for them to fix it. Good luck.

Ours went off for no apparent reason in residency, the fire department came out just to be safe. They were expired, they said they all needed to be replaced and offered to do it for me (pregnant and with an 18 month old probably helped) but I'm pretty handy so I went out and bought all new ones and replaced them myself.
