  • How would you feel?

I went to the hair salon to get a wash/cut/style today to just sort of pamper myself.

The girl doing my cut got me a cup of coffee and then took me back to get my cut. I told her what I wanted while she had her hands in my hair. No big deal.

Then her hands were on my shoulders. She started massaging my shoulders. I felt a little awkward but didn't say anything. She took the massage up a notch to totally getting at my shoulders, arms, neck and even my head. We were in total silence.

I felt .... no seriously ... I felt really weird. Obviously it's awesome to get a massage, but I felt like it was a massage I should have been getting from dh or something.

I'm not saying I didn't enjoy it, because I did, but I felt funny about it.

Am I weird? Is a massage like that normal at an upscale salon? Am I making mountains out of molehills in my freaked out little mind?

Never happened to me before. Only at facials, but the arm, shoulder, neck massage are an expected part of the treatment. Plus you're in a private setting. Maybe she thinks this will give her an edge or she's training to be a masseuse. Did you see anyone else getting a rubdown?

I've definitely had stylists do stuff like that before. I had a nail salon lady do that while my nails were drying once. Feels a little awkward, but not that out of the ordinary.

My stylists in ny always gave me an AMAZING arm/neck massage right after shampoo. I think sometimes they do want you to relax your shoulder blades down so try can get a more accurate cut. Here they just make me wear this weighted mat thing on my shoulders. I preferred the massage!

Last manicure I got the nail tech did this. It hadn't happened before but I just went with it. It was slightly awkward but just part of their service.

I go to salons all the time where they give a small massage. I love it.

I'm pretty sure that's an Aveda salon thing.

They always do that at Aveda...you can ask for a hand massage instead...they usually ask though...

I go to Mike's Barber Shop. Mike has never given me a massage. Prior to Mike's I used to go to Vinnies. Vinny never gave me a massage either. Is there something wrong with me?

I've never gotten a massage with a haircut, so I'd be surprised too. I have gotten them with manicures though - in fact, I used to get mani/pedis for this reason, because I mostly wanted the pedicure and the massage.

I've gotten a massage with a cut before.

Hmmmm. I'm seeing a new stylist tomorrow who is a total hottie (and a flaming queen). Wouldn't mind if he have me a massage.

I was going to say Aveda. I hate that place.

Not all Aveda salons are the same. The one I go to for hair massages the shampoo and conditioner in while washing the hair, and someone will come around during the cut to ASK if you want a hand massage, but there's no awkwardness.
