  • Teacher Gifts

Tomorrow is E's last day in her current daycare class, so I wanted to bring in a small gift for her 4 teachers. It's also kind of a Christmas gift too. I picked up some nice (on sale) coffee cups that I was planning to fill with a bag of homemade cookies. My mom said that was the worst gift ever. I thought lotions were the worst gift ever? Should I do something else?

I think that would be sweet. Who doesn't love cookies?

I think she was talking about the coffee cups, that everybody gives teachers coffee cups. I wanted to do something more original, but I just didn't have time - I was already at Hobby Lobby, where I got the cups, and I'm baking cookies for another event too, so I just doubled the recipe.

I'm all for mugs and cups I think they'll be happy with the thoughtful gesture...and cookies!

As a teacher I have gotten a massive amount of mugs over the years. However, you can never have too many Tervis tumblers. Mugs, sweets, and lotions all come in a huge abundance to teachers. I, of course, appreciate the gesture but I give away 90% of the mugs because we simply don't need that many and bring the treats to our family events so I don't become an overweight diabetic.

Tumblers were my original plan, but Hobby Lobby didn't have any, and I didn't have time to go anywhere else.

Totally fine, and I'm sure they'll appreciate them! Even if they don't end up keeping the mugs, most likely they will be grateful for your generosity!

I picked up some small Christmas cactus, wrapped in green burlap, tied with gold ribbons and inserted a few gold floral accents. We found a yellow species that is copper colors with pink interior. The plants were only $5 so we didn't spend that much.

Most classes organize a money gift.

I know that the mugs are horrible but I did them anyway this year. K1 has EIGHT teachers. I just couldn't afford anything else after contributing to the class gift and I'd feel stupid giving $5 gift cards.

I'm the ultimate in lazy and got them all target gift cards.

We are giving truffles from Costco in pretty glass jars. There is a money collection too, but I'm not sure how much to give. Our school has some serious high rollers ($500+ into the money pool), so it's not like there is a norm.

I contribute to class gifts, I never have time to manage individual gifts for teachers. If a teacher is especially awesome I will write a special thank you note to him or her.

Best teacher gifts (besides amazon gift cards) I've gotten have been umbrellas and gloves. Worst are without a doubt pen and pencil sets.
Mugs are OK, but our cabinets are bursting with them. A nice travel mug is always good.

If you wanted to up the game, you could throw some small Starbucks cards into the mugs too.

I approach this as: we do nice things, we hope they are appreciated, and we don't worry about it after that. If they don't use the mug, that's ok. My mom is a teacher, and she has gotten too much of basically everything at this point in her life.

All that said, we will probably get a Starbucks or Target card for DS's lead teacher and throw it in the envelope with one of our Christmas cards. There are no organized class gifts at this stage. What I'm having a hard time with figuring out is whether to get something for the off-and-on long term sub who's been covering for the teacher who quit a couple months ago.
