  • Are you a food snob?

I think I have become one and wondering if I am the only one. DH and I looooove food. It is not just sustenance but an experience. So much so that we plan our travel around it and our dates often consist of going to food/wine/craft beer type of events. He and I are also pretty good cooks. I love making special meals for friends and family.

Having said all that, I realized last night that my taste bar must have gotten set pretty high. We went to a new restaurant for dinner and although the food was good, it did not wow me. I want to be wowed. Snob right? I realized that not only can I cook what I had, I can make it better...and it would not have cost as much. DH was more generous and said that we should give this restaurant another try...once they have worked the kinks out. O-M-G we are sounding like food critics OR snobs.

Anyone else on the quest for food that impresses them?

Yes. I'm a food snob. Sometimes. Most of the time, however, I just want food. I can enjoy a greasy spoon or diner too.

If, though, I'm going out to a nice $$$ dinner, I definitely have high expectations and want to be wowed.

I am not a good snob but I am a drink snob. I will send back a drink quickly if it is not to my liking. Flat champagne sends me over the edge. Want to charge me 20-30 bucks a glass it better have bubbles!!

I was talking to SIL about this last week. Say we go into some mid priced gastropub. Unless they have an entree section with prices competitive with 'fine dining' I'm not going to expect very much. So there's a direct correlation between price and expectation (assuming they've already been vetted by reviews). These humbler restaurants (with hip names, obscure cocktails, and enormous beer lists) are often where I'm most impressed. Probably because we're not expecting (and paying) much. But when I pay $40 for, say, 3 scallops? They better blow my socks off. That's what happens less and less. We go to the supposedly best (i.e. most expensive) restaurants in town and they're good, not great. Like you, I know I could make it far better at home. But vegan charcuterie? Bone marrow? Any local delicacy? I'd rather explore that at local joints and maybe eventually start making it on my own.

As long as it doesn't move on its own, I usually don't care too much. But I am very particular about sushi and bacon. Raw fish better be fresh and the bacon extra crispy.

Amen to that. I cannot abide bacon that bends or is chewy.

Ha! Do not mess with my bacon...period.

My snob does not discriminate...I love hole in the wall, had to travel a ways to find, for some cheap food that is going to blow my socks off kind of places as well as the must make resrvations months in advance pricey ones. Regardless, I want to be wowed by an amazing culinary or handcrafted drinks experience.

Nope. I like a good pub burger and a beer.

We're in an awkward place, palate-wise. I would say we don't *mind* mediocre food at mediocre prices, but it's not really worth leaving home for. The ones that are a step above and worth the outing, aren't *enough* better than the mediocre places to justify the higher prices. So...I no longer consider dinner out to be a fun date night. On Monday when our kids were off with grandparents, I made pan-fried pork chops with wild mushroom cream sauce, oven-roasted potatoes (crisp on the outside, creamy on the inside) with porcini salt, and a green salad lightly dressed with good basalmic. I liked it just as well as the $20 entree place and maybe not quite as well as the $30 entree place -- but portions were more generous! Plus we get to pair it with a really decent $15 bottle instead of paying $30+ for the same quality of wine, and we didn't have to wait for the check, we just went upstairs to watch a movie.

I do prefer high quality food, even at dives. However, I don't enjoy cooking that much, mostly the prep and cleaning, so I don't mind mediocre food out either, as long as I haven't paid much for it. If I'm paying a lot, I want my mind to be blown.

There are a few food items I'm slightly snobbish about: bread, sushi, beer, baked goods.

All of those things are enough of a calorie or money expense that it has to be worth it. I'm not going to spend the calories or dollars if I'm not loving it.

So true! I pretty much never eat any dessert/cake that is not homemade...and now expanded to breads and pasta. I am not willing to take on the calories for meh food.

Funny story...DH wanted to get me a birthday cake to go along with the dinner some friends were making for me. I told him that I would rather make my own cake than eat store bought. We take said homemade cake to the friends house and cut it etc. One of their kids (9yo) came up to compliment my cake - told me it was delicious...as good as WalMart cake. Bawhahahahahah

I'm sort of a snob. Like others, I don't want to pay for a fancy meal that isn't worth the price, but I've also been known to eat more than my fair share of Velveeta and Rotel dip, too. Keepin' it classy!

My favorite dining experience is ordering chef tasting menus at really nice restaurants. I feel like I'm laying down a challenge - "Show me what you can do, chef!" It's almost always worth the price!
