  • Planning a SoFlo Trip

I'd like to hit up Miami for a day or two, then hit the keys for 3 to 4, then do a follow up stay-over in Miami to break up the travel.
I haven't been to Miami in... 11 years (?) and don't remember much. We will have DS1 & 2 with us (and probably fluffies as well): taking suggestions on family friendly activities, etc. I think we'd like to do a bungalow with kitchen or VRBO property in the keys.

I might consider a longer stay if anyone wants to vacation together and split the cost of a bigger dwelling...

    Thanks!

Yummm, is the first thing I thought about. I am no help as far as family friendly because when we are there we only eat, hang out with family and eat some more. Saw Chef the other night and it is the first time I have ever felt homesick...when I saw them shopping at the market. I see so much good food in your future.

As a kid, I enjoyed the seaquarium, parrot jungle, monkey jungle and zoo. But there are other places in FL similar. I know my cousins take their kids to the science museum but that is also something you can do elsewhere. No, I am no help. But excited for you on the food front!

Okay, we did a similar trip when I was pregnant with N. It was so much fun. We flew into Miami late one night, at lunch at Versailles the next day, and then drove to Marathon. We spent a day there and then drove to Key West, where we spent two. Then we drove back to Miami and went to South Beach for one more night.

I'd actually recommend not breaking it up so much and spending more time in the Keys.

                      Things we loved:

Marathon--consider driving from your place and making this your first stop. We stayed here:

                      http://www.ihg.com/holidayinnexpress...mt/hoteldetail

It was reasonably priced and really nice and clean. Across the street is a pretty good restaurant. And the key is so skinny it is all waterfront!

We used that hotel as our base for Bahia Honda State Park, which is just on the other side of Seven Mile Bridge. They have 2 good beaches, kayaking (we kayaked out by the old bridge and to a little island), and a neat little hike to the old bridge. Definitely worth it and some of the better beaches you will find in the keys.

We also really wanted to stop here, but didn't have time: http://www.turtlehospital.org/

                      Key West:

We stayed in this place and it was AWESOME. Cute little bungelows a few blocks from Duval. They are gorgeous and have a perfect little play pool in the middle that is great for kids. The owner was a really nice guy who told us about a really cool dessert restaurant...

The restaurant was called Better than Sex. And guys...it might be. Ah-mazing desserts and wine in chocolate dipped wine glasses...not a place for kids though. You need reservations too. Funny story--I recommended this to a (former?) IMSNer and she sent me a Facebook message with the receipt and said they decided not to try and get it reimbursed...guess why (Also Heidi, I think this place was made for you. Actually, both Heidis)

One day we took a ferry out to the Dry Tortugas and snorkeled. It was really neat, but I'm not sure I would go with kids. It is 2 hours each way and pretty desolate once you get there. But oh so beautiful.

Make sure you go to Mallory Square for the Sunset Festival every night.

We also ate at this place and it was really good too:

DH also did his best to try every version of Key Lime Pie imaginable. It's his favorite dessert.

Yes! You need to do the sunset at least one time.

The receipt. I don't think she would mind

Jealous! Hubby and I stopped in Key West on one of our cruises and really loved it. We walked from the pier to the Southernmost point, stopped at the Hemingway house, a winery, and two places for key lime pie.
