  • Talk about medicine...

It seems we don't talk about medicine (be it training or attendinghood) or the changes in healthcare (politics) as much as we should as a support community for medical spouses.

Any idea why? I feel like we should get back to those roots a little bit...

A lot of us are out of training, and we have repressed any and all medical training experience.

Honestly, so much has changed too. I don't feel current on topics anymore. Healthcare is crazy changing right now, and I've been neck deep in small children, dirty socks and burnt casseroles. I have baaaaaad mommy brain.

The most relevant topics for me are financial changes, but even that is such a quagmire that my eyes start to glaze over.

It was a time that, while benign as far as residency programs go, was trying in other ways. I'm jaded for other reasons. ☺️

I'm feeling kinda powerless too. Everything feels out of our control.

I only know about changes if DH mentions them, and he is pretty laid back, so.....

As far as the job in general, I guess it is just not usually on my radar as a topic, again due to DH being laid back. I think that issues vary according to specialty, practice type, and region of the country. But I'm game for a good medical discussion if someone comes up with a topic!

I admit, it is frustrating...to talk about medicine. Actually, it is borderline depressing and I am in one of those physician friendly states. I have gotten involved with our med association & alliance at the state level so I (me) can keep DH informed. However, I hate it. I always feel uneasy about our career decisions. Furthermore, since this is a medical spouse support group, I want support for my issues. I think we do a good job supporting trailing spouses/career going to hell, single parenting, head up ass syndrome, etc. issues related to being married to a dawkter.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I actually avoid a lot of those conversations or don't pose those questions a lot of the time because it's pretty depressing and pretty negative. Not the members here, necessarily, but the general "temperature" of medicine is just...negative. And sad. And scary. And to be this far in - which is to say, not far in at all - it's pretty terrifying to realize how much I'll have to worry/be prepared for/be disappointed over, etc. in the next decade or so. I'm just really scared about what this career means for us, and frankly sometimes I just don't want to talk about it or read about the realities. I want to keep living in a fantasy world where we'll be very likely to move home/match at home, be able to pay off debt, live comfortably, it won't be out of the question/impossible to find a suitable job in a good area (i.e., home), and my husband won't spend his career constantly letting me down and missing out on every important thing that happens.

                I'll readdress this topic:
As an attending, I trust no one. Zero.
The suits run the show, and the white coats get the shaft. I don't trust people who say they have his best interest in mind, enjoy him, etc. We've been burned and squeezed, and we stay ready with a "worse case scenario" plan for selling/moving/relocating at any time.

Yay for my tin foil hat! 😄

I always try to post articles about medical training/medicine. They generate little discussion. Then i see everyone posting articles about medicine on their FB feeds.

I KNOW. This makes me crazy. We can't talk about it here? I don't get it.

First thought that came to mind is that if I posted an article about medicine on my FB page it would be for the friends that are not in medicine.

I err on the side of caution because it's hard to gauge what others think. Personally, it's harder to be so open about salaries and reimbursement cuts with non med peeps.

I think with the articles, a lot of time we're all in agreement, and the most I can think of to post is "I agree! Thanks for posting!" But then that gets into my hesitation to post non-substantial things (which I'm trying to get over since people tend to prefer any feedback to none).
