  • The great pipe drama

Last night, I was texting on my phone, and dh called me half-hysterical into the bathroom explaining that we had "burst pipes".

I looked all over for water. Nothing.

    No burst pipes. Frozen pipes.

He wanted to call a plumber out to fix things right away. I told him we needed to run the water (it was jut a trickle from the shower and bathtub which share pipes) and go to bed. The trickle gradually increased during the night until the shower went back on.

That led to his next discovery ... we can't keep the house at freezing temperatures. HA.

DH's favorite thing to say when people say they are cold in this house is "put on a sweater". I will put the heat on up to 68 even *gasp* 70 during the day and he turns it down to 60 when he gets home. It IS cold in this house. It's colder than 60. Recently, we've had temps of -40 to -25 with howling winds. Duh the pipes freeze when the bathroom is ice cold.

I have argued for years that we need to turn the heat up in the winter.

Now he googled it and discovered we need to turn the heat up.

So finally .... he has the heat on 74 today.

I stand victorious. Thank you pipes.

    Kris

Ha!! Don't you love how a completely anonymous source like Google can convince them of something their own trusted spouse and best friend has been saying for years? Nothing will get DH to jump on the bandwagon of something I've been talking about or suggesting for a while like an endorsement from a third party that he either doesn't or barely knows personally.

      I applaud

DH went to our rental house during Xmas break and they'd completely shut down the heat. It was reading 40. We need to talk to them about minimal winter settings. They're from CA.

Strong work Kris!!! We only got down to single digits and we had all the sinks dripping, bathroom cabinets open, and the air at 72 24/7. I cannot even imagine the below zero temps y'all get!!!

This is our ridiculous problem all year round. In the summer, he wants the AC off. (No!) In the winter, he wants the heat set as low as possible. We literally all huddle around our fireplace and we all have heating blankets to sleep because we're so cold. He's the only one who claims to not be cold.... People come into my house in the winter and ask "is there a window open?" and I have to just explain we keep the temp low.

I don't believe our thermostat either. Some rooms in the house get frightfully cold even though our main thermostat will be reading 67 (or whatever).

Today is the first day I can sit comfortably in the office without my hands freezing.

            Yay pipes!

DH took a week off before Christmas because he was really burnt out and working the holiday. Of course, I had to work! (Boo new job.). The kids were at school. So he spent a week sleeping late and puttering around the house. After two days he started calling me at my office complaining that the house was freezing. Yeah, no kidding buddy. I've been working at home in that drafty beast for nine years. I guess he always thought my day time fires were a luxury. Nope, necessity. Before he went back to work he bought all these fire starter implements because he knows I struggle getting a real blaze going when he's at work. It was kind of sweet.

Our pipes burst in two locations last year. Kitchen ceiling came down and washer dryer lines burst. Last night we disconnected the washer water and I had to cut a hole in our brand new kitchen ceiling to let the heat get between the floors so the bathroom pipe wouldn't freeze in the floor again. Our plumber told us last year that we had to put in a fake air vent or we'd lose the ceiling again to frozen pipes. Now the hole is there, just need a vent! Lol.

                I'm so over old houses.

Interesting...my German friend is the same way. I stayed in his house while I was finishing work in our last town and had already sold my house. It was either freezing or burning up....but he did not want me to mess with the thermostat. During the day, we would turn it off. So, it took forever to warm pr cool when you came home from work. Yet, he had no problems buying new Shun knives, Bose system, and other high end crap...oh, we had heated floors in the kitchen he installed so he could walk barefoot on the tile. He told me saving on utilities is how he can afford such nice things! DH and I are visiting him next weekend for his bday. I already told him I am not driving 6hrs so I can go freeze in his house.

Glad to hear you are more comfortable in your home.

Is carpet in the bathroom a German thing too? When he installed the heated floor in he kitchen, I asked if he was doing that in the bathrooms too. Oh no, not needed because he was going to get carpet installed in the bathrooms.
