If you could be from any culture which would you choose?

Today we went to my neighbors baby shower and she's Indian. Usually she dresses in yoga pants (like me) and is pharmacist. I flove her! All the Indian women at this baby shower looked *amazing*. The colorful fabrics, the bling, the facial jewelry, the thickest dark hair with jewels. I felt pretty lame and boring in my American mom clothes. "Dear Lord, if you ever send me back to this planet please let me wear a colorful sari and bling all over my body". The food is pretty awesome too. The other part of their culture that I loved was that there were sooooo many kids everywhere without adults chasing them. I've never seen this many kids at a WASP party. It was strangely noticeable, but everyone just kinda gave them minimal attention too. They we're fine. They set up movie and popcorn in the next room which helped the adults to visit, but they felt so much more natural than what I've experienced at a lot of parties. There was crying and tears, don't get me wrong, but no "shows" of parenting and interventions.

It's kind of funny because growing up, I always thought American things were exotic like meatloaf. But now that I'm older, I see so much beauty in my parents' cultures that I can't imagine being anything else. Although I guess I'm kind of a mixture of everything since I grew up here and everyone in our family marries outside of our race. Family gatherings are like It's a Small World.

Ha! In my mom's family too. Everyone is married to someone from a different culture/country and has lived abroad. There is the rule that you should only speak the language everyone in the room can understand. Never thought about it being it's a small world.

I really do not want to be part of any other culture. Love my mix. However, I would love to be able to have the time and money to travel more...and immerse myself in other cultures. When we travel, we never stay or do anything that remotely looks like what you can get in the USA. So, no large cruises, all inclusive resorts, tour bus trips, tourist trap stops, etc. We want to stay and do what locals do...and have found that this can actually be cheaper travel even staying at swanky places. Although I do not consider myself judgy, truthfully I am about people that have never stepped outside their own culture. I find that there is a correlation between POV and exposure to other beliefs and mindsets. BTW - I have noted this among those with lots of $ to travel and those with limited resources. So, to answer your question, I would say that I would want the ability to be more worldly.

Agree completely. Also, while I wouldn't necessarily want to belong to another cultural group, I do wish I had family members in cool countries that I would actually like to visit.

BTW, DH is 100% german by bloodline, but 0% culturally. They didnt't continue their German culture here and became WASP ASAP in WI. They are more Lutheran than anything.

Because I love Bavarian culture! And Christmas! And the castles! A really romanticized view for sure. The three days I spent in Munich were some of the best in my life. They would probably tell me to shut up though. This is my desktop right now.

Funny story, on a train from Munich to Schwangau, where the castle is, my sister and were sleeping with our feet propped slightly on the back of the seat in front of us. The ticket taker decided to inform us this wasn't allowed by smacking us both so hard we were still smarting an hour later. I believe this would be assault in the US? Which is why I think I probably have a ridiculously romanticized view of the culture

My company has an office in Freising. They serve beer in the cafeteria. Sadly I have little to no chance of traveling there

I'm a mutt, married to a 100% awesome dude. I get plenty of "culture", which I enjoy. My family on both sides have been here so long that any specific traditions/accents/etc are all whitewashed and lost.

I love that our kids will be bi-lingual, have familial names, and will know how to cook traditional dishes/partake in special customs.
