  • I called 911

Thankfully it wasn't for me or anyone in our family. I was driving to work and passed a car on the side of the road facing the wrong direction. I thought it was just an abandoned, broken-down car until I saw a person hunched over in the driver seat with their head on the steering wheel. I debated for a minute, not sure if that's what I really saw because I wasn't able to get a close look, but then I decided I should report it, just in case, so I called. They had apparently gotten several other calls and responders were on the way, which made me feel better. I like to think that if I was in an accident like that, someone who drove by would report it too.

I called 911 a few months ago - I saw a homeless man start seizing and fall into the road. I pulled over and dialed 911 and another man and I directed cars around and luckily the first responders arrived within 2 minutes.

I am ashamed to admit I was scared to touch the seizing man. He was homeless, seizing and foaming at the mouth (EMS said it was likely an alcohol related seizure). I was pregnant with D and all I could think of was Hep B, etc... I directed cars and got blankets from the car but I let the other man hold his head. I still wish I hadn't thought so much about myself in that situation.

T&S - you did great. DH and I call a lot. The ER doc and first responder in him are trained to note things that don't fit a typical pattern. It's amazing the things I would walk or drive by that are an emergency for someone else. I hope my kids learn from us to always help, in the capacity they can (which is often only calling 911).

I probably would have been the same, T&S! I was a bit concerned that nobody had stopped for this car and I initially felt bad for stopping, but they were out of the road, it was going to be really difficult for me to actually get turned around back to the site, and with no actual emergency or medical training, there's nothing I could have done other than call it in.

Alot- I would have been nervous calling too, but I am glad you did!

I had to call 911 last year too. We were driving to the zoo and a guy on a motorcycle lost control, fell off the motorcycle and rolled into the traffic. We were on the highway. Luckily his friend was driving behind him and while we stopped traffic in one lane as he rolled across in front of us, she got into the next lane and stopped traffic and he stopped rolling in front of her. They were both wearing official fatigues. I hit the emergency button on my cell and apparently there must have been police near by because they were there before I finished telling the operator what was going on. Amazingly, the guy got up and walked off the road.

I had to call for a squad once when I was running a school event. A group of kids were rough housing and one girl got tackled and hit her head hard on the ground. She was throwing a fit and claimed she hurt her head and her neck and couldn't move. She was like 10. Even though my mom instinct told me she as just being dramatic, I hailed the police we had working nearby and they called the squad to check her out. She was fine. The squad was so nice about it. They checked her out, contacted her mom, walked through what to look for with her, and most of all --THEY DIDN'T MAKE ME FEEL LIKE A NUISANCE!

I was very self conscious about wasting their time but figured if a kid is hurt under your care, you need to err on the side of caution.

They were super nice about it, which I appreciated, and the call was probably less than a minute. I explained what I saw and where, and they asked it was a blue Tahoe, and I said yes, and that's when they said they had gotten the other calls. I do wish I knew what happened!

I would have called too. I have made several calls over the years and never once regretted it. It would be worse to not call and wish you had.
