  • Do you use LinkedIn?

    Yes/no
    For what purpose?

I'm a complete newb when it comes to LinkedIn. One of my professors "friended" me and then pointed out my profile wasn't up to date. I spent some time updating it this morning, but why? Will people have access to this? Will this be important in some way other than sharing professional stuff with a small group of people that I've got as friends?

    I'd love some input/advice/information!

When I have participated in hiring, I have always checked LinkedIn to see if the candidates have up to date profiles. It can provide a little more information than is on your resume, and just having a good profile shows potential employers that you are Internet-savvy and up to date.

Can someone see a profile who is not a friend?

I have a profile and keep it updated, but I'm not convinced it's helpful - it's more of a just in case type of thing.

Yes, I believe your profile is public, which makes sense because it's generally used for networking and professional information.

Depends on your settings I think, but yes there is a public version of your profile.

I keep mine updated, but I really just think of it as an online resume. I don't do the endorsements thing or post statuses.

It can be good for headhunting and recruitment purposes. I've been headhunted via LinkedIn a few times. I find it is also kind of nice to use it to stay connected with acquaintances that aren't close enough to warrant Facebook friendship.

My amusing add to this thread - LinkedIn doesn't censor. When we started the adoption process, we found our baby's biological mom on LinkedIn, her photo was topless and occupation "drug dealer."
