  • What are you going to do

To be present in your life today?

We're so hooked on social media and technology. I fell like everywhere I go people are on their phones (me included).

What are you going to do to disconnect and be present/be with others for a little while?

    Kris

The practice of mindfulness has really changed my life...for the better. I am now to the point that I practice on auto mode. Even if it is being on the IPad, I am intentional about what I am doing, feeling, thinking, etc.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!

I'm amazingly antsy through the meditations which was a big surprise to me!

Just like with anything, it takes practice. At first, I was not very patient with myself. My to do list and other anxiety causing thoughts would creep in. Let them in, accept them but do not let them linger...my instructor told me. Another thing that helped me was saying to myself "I wonder what I am going to think of next...and wait for it." After a while, my mind would finally clear enough so I could be in the present.

I think I need a lot of practice! Right now we're just doing body scan meditations and all I feel is my heart pounding and my head saying "is it almost done yet?" I don't want to judge my inattention, but it's hard. I imagine myself more capable of being Zen than I am at this particular point. But I'm working on it. I am on day 4 of 30 min of practice. I hope to get through the 8 week class.

Lol. Mindfulness should probably be its own thread!

Today I had a yoga lesson and went to the power hour class after that. I typically don't bring my phone with me to the studio.

Also did a make up lesson with one of my college seniors. She's a nursing major but working on a very adventurous piece. We have a great time together and I'm impressed with how much she's improved. Sometimes I'm able to get out of teacher mode and just enjoy the sounds my students make.

Generally though, I have been working on reading in the mornings / evenings instead of getting on the computer. Of course, I do have a very consistent need to respond to work emails but as much as possible I've been trying to disconnect. When I was feeling way too stressed a few months ago, dreading Mondays especially, I started trying to identify something I was looking forward to that next day. Coincidentally it was usually my problem student! Then in the evenings I try to sit and do an assessment -- what is one thing I did that day that I'm proud of? When did I struggle? Where did I fail? It's really helped me to stop letting my mind run away with itself.

I'm going to get out the magic wand and have a party for myself.

Planning on sitting down with an adorable baby pattern and knitting in peace for a bit today.

I love hearing about other people practice mindfulness! I'm learning that skill also. Not a lot of success just yet, but I'm working on it.

Today I allowed myself to take a nap while my daughter was in preschool instead of running errands.

                            Hopefully yoga?
