What are some great shows and movies you've seen and recommend on Netflix? We don't have a TV and I can't stand commercials so I almost exclusively watch Netflix when I have a hankering for some quality couch potato time.

I just finished watching "The prize winner of Defiance, Ohio" and it was great. It's a true story based on a memoir about about a housekeeper wife with 10 kids that enters contests and write jingles to support her large family.

We mostly like TV shows. Faves are:
Luther (BBC cop/mystery drama, Idris Elba, SO GOOD)
        Doctor Who (reboot)
        Battlestar Galactica (nerds)
        Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch, hello!)
Anthony Bourdain - No Reservations and Parts Unknown
        Mind of a Chef
        Orange is the New Black
        The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Broadchurch (More BBC cop/mystery drama, David Tennant, yes please)
Cosmos (my husband has a big crush on Neil DeGrasse Tyson)
        Call the Midwife
Wife of PGY-4 (of 6), cat herder, and mom to a sassy-pants four-nager.

Holy crap, this show! We watched the first season a few months ago, and we DVRd the second season and are halfway through it now, and it is SO GOOD. My heart is absolutely BREAKING for Ellie. She did nothing wrong, and her life has gone to complete and total crap and nobody around her even sympathizes with her at all, except maybe her crazy sister, and Alec, who's unstable at best. And she's putting herself out there to help solve another case. Gah!

OMG we haven't seen the second season!! I didn't even know it was out. Is it finished? Or still running?

It aired on BBC America over the last couple months; 8 more episodes, it's done airing now; looks like it's "on demand" through a bunch of cable and satellite providers, and it's available on amazon instant video for $15-$20 for the season (or you can wait for netflix to get it in a while). Looks like season 3 is confirmed with Olivia Coleman and David Tennant, too, to air next year.

+1 to Call the Midwife! That is my current binge of choice. I can't wait for Season 3 of OITNB to come out, and I just wrapped up Friday Night Lights. OMG Friday Night Lights....so much love. Mrs. Coach is just the best.

Yea, Broadchurch is really good. So is The Killing. Best series I've seen in a reallllllly long time is Top of the Lake. All 3 happen to be detective shows.

The Returned is also good. Super creepy.

Oh dear...just realized I've already seen Gracepoint which was apparently a bad American remake of Broadchurch with David Tennant in it. I feel cheated.

Maybe I'll just watch it over even though I know what happened, with a weird twist via Gracepoint.

I've heard Gracepoint wasn't as good. Haven't watched it. You'll still want to watch Broadchurch. This is absolutely gripping (watching the 6th episode of the second season right now).

Oh yes, Broadchurch is so much better, from the 1 or 2 episodes I saw of Gracepoint. I also enjoyed The Killing, Top of the Lake, and The Fall, while we're on mysteries...

The Killing (all three seasons) and The Fall were great.

Grace point sucked, but the plot was decent. It's the same plot, so I don't know if watching it over with the better Broadchurch will be that much fun. I'll have to try.

I'm thinking it would still be good to watch. I'm half tempted to watch the whole thing again, just to see what clues they might have slipped in that I missed the first time.
