My only basis for that is that my recollection was that SS and GMW didn't have signed contracts until about 3 months before the job? But I could be totally wrong.

But now that I think about it they must have known about openings before then.

Although I'm pretty sure Nsg doesn't contract more than a few months out in advance, so I doubt we'll know much for a good year and a half.

@MarissaNicole - I usually stay out of these discussions because I feel NSG is different but this is the neurosurgery search group. The owner is an NSG spouse and DH was very happy with them when he was hunting, http://www.rosmansearch.com/

I must have not heard about the young chairman.

And yes, we only had our job about 3 months before start - but we were private, not academic. Academics takes longer and I think GMW would agree with me that they didn't have their signed contract until late either but they were in negotiations much longer then we were.

We were good friends with him. So awful.

Dh was offered his academic position about 18 months before the end of fellowship. It took another 6 months or so before we had a contract and then minimal back and forth. Like Angie said, dh's program is also hiring a year out.

Yes, my DH is in academics. Hard-core academics. He has a 50/50 split, which is unusual in NSG. Many academic NSGs we know (you must do a fellowship to go into academic NSG) have their jobs before fellowship, but others (like my husband) wanted to look for a job during fellowship. We had the interviews done and offers on the table by January/February of his fellowship year, and made a decision on March 27. However, insisted on a contract (which absolutely blew their minds--they wanted to do it on a handshake...uh, no...), and that was so unexpected and confusing for them that it took two months to paper.

The Job Hunt - General Questions

Depending on the state, you need to have something prior to three months out because state licensing can take six months (or more). Depending on where you want to end up, that can be a huge factor. In EM, new grads are securing jobs earlier and earlier. It's 9 months-18 months for corporate groups and probably 4-9 months for academia. Credentialing does tend to be faster for those coming out of training vs changing jobs because it's much simpler without an extensive work history.

Sound advice -- again, the licensing can take forever!

I did know about that chairman, he was a good friend of one of DH's mentors. So sad. And yes, that probably will (or could) cause some ripples. We expected some ripples the year DH was done, that didn't happen and that is all I'm going to really say since this is GR.

My #1 thought though is if you want academics find a mentor, someone who will talk you up to other centers, openings, etc. Many academic centers keep their own in small sub-specialties.

And I'll be the dissenting opinion on the licensing - yes some states have histories of taking forever but DH was licensed in two states and credentialed in his hospital in less then 3 months.

My DH heard about the opening about a year in advance (but they did wait around for about 6 months for him to finish fellowship). He didn't interview there until about November. Then took a few more month to sign his contract. He only interviewed one other place, but then there was talk of staying at fellowship location and going back to residency hospital too.

But it was all a little last minute for my tastes considering he knew where he was going to fellowship three or four years in advance.
