It is really sweet seeing the proposal stories. We had a handy friend who is master jeweller make our engagement ring so he also took care of us, but yes you are right people make all sorts of incorrect and downright rude assumptions. To us the meaning comes from us designing it together, the engraving, and what it represents, people on the outside tend to overlook things like that . I do think sometimes the simpler (and thankfully as a student, less expensive) gestures can have the most effect. We used to write (as in physically write on nice stationery) letters to each other instead of buying gifts. We still do this now they just take a little longer to get to each other via AirMail
