  • Ants

We have ants. Like serious ants. It's not really an indoor ants issue, though they are getting inside... it's more that there are at least two mega-anthills in the yard and a lot more small ones. What are the best solutions for anthills in the yard? We prefer non-chemical but at this point we need to kill a LOT of ants.

Do you have any dogs? If not, I would get the serious stuff, but if they are too deep in the ground you may need a pest control guy. Ours went away when we had termite treatment.

What kind of ants are they? I would go straight for chemicals if they're fire ants or rasberry ants - those are bad news. If they are rasberry ants, you may need to call an exterminator, as the chemicals to kill them are newer and may not be available to unlicensed people. For fire ants, I would go with Amdro to treat the mounds. We had great luck last year using a spreader with a fire ant yard treatment. It is safe for kids to be on after a few hours (or a day, I can't remember), and it kept them out of our yard all summer. They haven't come back yet this year, but if they do, we'll treat it again.

They're definitely not fire ants, and I don't know what raspberry ants are but these are black/brown. DH mentioned the hills after he mowed yesterday, but I only just looked and saw the full extent of the problem... now I think we probably need the big guns. Hoooooly crap so many ants. We have indoor-only cats so they're safe as long as we don't track something in or the ants come in and they eat them... the little cat does like to eat bugs.

I had carpenter ants when I bought my house and ended up calling an exterminator. It wasn't that expensive and the ants were gone with just one application.

Black/brown, with big mounds sounds like our fire ant where we currently reside. They hurt like a mother... 😔

I think fire ants are lighter brown with a darker head? Also we're far enough north that I don't know if they even live here. Pretty sure these are just your average little black ants. But lots of them. I got an Orkin quote today but I think we'll try something OTC from Home Depot first. Ugh, we have a bunny den with a baby bun in the middle of the yard, are the chemicals going to kill it?
