    Snakes

    As several of you know from my previous rants, I have a snake phobia that is textbook. I hate being this irrational. - so much so that I have sought therapy twice. I am better...at times. Today, was not one of them. One of my worst fears...a snake in my house - happened today. It was in the hallway leading to my bedroom. The hallway I had just walked by. When my dobe followed me, he began barking. Dobermans rarely bark. I went out to see what the deal was and saw the snake!!! Thank goodness DH was home because I ran back in to my room and sobbed hysterically while he and our dog cornered it and killed it. Again, not my best moment.

    I have been on DH about sprinkling snake away ever since spring. How the hell did that damn thing get in my house? I am meticulous about not leaving the doors open plus I sprinkle the snake away stuff on each threshold. I sprinkle it so it falls through the deck slats. Our backyard reeks of mothballs. I rather smell that than find a snake. I am beyond freaked. At least DH no,longer thinks my fears are irrational. My reaction may be but now he will not ignore my concerns of snakes getting in the house. He already bought another type of snake away - this one smells a little better - like cloves and cinnamon.

    Do you guys have any suggestions of how I can snake proof my house? I do not care if the snake is harmless...I am about snakes like some are about spiders. I could really use some xanax or lots of alcohol...problem is, I am afraid of relaxing too much and not being vigilant. Yes, totally not rational...hence, the phobia.

    Snake proof the house? No. But, if they have something to eat, or a place to hide (outside), then they will be around.

    Snake proof the outside?
    Remove food and space, and of course, I recommend attack chickens.

      Our house has a deck that wraps around 2/3 of the back of the house. My fear is that there are all kinds of snake families living down there. At our last house we had a stamped concrete outdoor area. Never in the 6 yrs there did we have an issue. Squirrels and birds were our only visitors. Just this year, I have had 3 possums, some strange iguana thing and an armadillo in my backyard. Wish I had room for chickens. My neighbor said that I needed fox urine. The urine will drive away the food source - mice. Ughhhh. Pray tell, where does one go about purchasing fox urine? Annnnd what will my backyard smell like? 😳

        How horrifying! In my opinion you handled it quite well!

        Snakes are disgusting and frightening, I cannot even fathom finding one in my home! When DH does the job search I'm going to have to make sure we don't move somewhere where snakes are common!

        Can you hire a pest control place to assess your property and take preventative measures?

          It might be a result of all the rain we had. Lots of snake sightings around here.
          Married to a newly minted Pediatric Rad, momma to a sweet girl and a bunch of (mostly) cute boy monsters.

            [MENTION=1550]MarissaNicole[/MENTION], we lived here 8 years ago, just a couple of blocks away and had no issue. I think ST is right because there is waaaay too much "wildlife" fir my taste.

            When I called pest control last year after seeing a 4ft rat snake ON the deck next to the grill, they said to use the snake away and get a cat. I do not think the cat will find living with two dogs pleasant.

              We've had three cats and two dogs forever basically. Don't rule out the cat. If you can provide protected space, maybe consider adopting a feral cat to live outdoors? Feral cats basically never find homes since they can't live indoors. They need barns or some shelter, but not a "home" per se. I'm not sure if you are suburban, urban or rural.
