  • Least-messy car snacks

I need ideas for snacks I can pack for DS1 for our road trip to fellowship. I just got a new car this week, so I DO NOT WANT ANY MESSES. So far I've had a no food rule, but it's an 8 hour trip and I know DS1 will do better if I pack snacks.
Any ideas besides carrot sticks and water? Pouches always seem to wind up flung across the back seat, so those are out!

What did you end up getting? I remember you were thinking the Audi, did you end up getting it?

Nuts, and bite-sized dried fruit (not big pieces that are more likely to get sucked on and spit out), would be my suggestions.

Teddy Grahams are also good - even if they get dropped, they're easy to vacuum up later. If you want to bring pouches, you can give them to him at rest stops outside of the car.

All car snacks are messy. Sorry. Certainly some are less so. I would stick with dry cereals, fruit bars, gummies, stuff that you can easily vacuum if necessary.

Grapes are good. Avoid Pop-Tarts, they are the absolute WORST for the car. Ugh

I used to think pretzels would be good, but I was vacuuming out the car seats recently and I found so many pretzel crumbs! So pretzels and goldfish are definitely off the list.
Thanks for the suggestions! I hadn't thought of gummy things, and I'm definitely getting some Teddys and apple slices before we leave.

Apologies in advance if this is super dumb, but could you stop every couple hours or so for a snack time? You'd get a break from staring at the highway and DS1 could eat with your assistance so he's not flinging stuff around the car. This could absolutely be ridiculous, so again, sorry if my non-kidness is showing.

                      My thought, too.

Personally, I'm with what Ruffles&Dots said. think your best bet to keep a clean car is to bring snacks and plan to pull over to a rest stop or somewhere, exit the car, eat the snacks then get back on the road. Honestly, it would probably take less time than vacuuming out the crumbs!

We'll definitely stop every few hours either way, but I'm just aiming to have as many things up my sleeve as possible to keep DS1 entertained along the way. If we don't need the snacks, great! But I just have a feeling he'll start getting crabby right as his little brother is falling asleep or something, and I'll wish I had something to keep his mouth full.

DH's latest idea is for us to leave at 8pm and just drive through the night, and hope the boys sleep most of the way. I'm giving it consideration, since the boys fell asleep easily in the car on the way home from a baseball game tonight at 9pm. It would certainly solve the snacking issue if I could get them to sleep the whole way! (Or I could end up with two over tired boys, so we'll see if we even go through with this idea...)

We caved on our really long holiday car trip to TVs in the car. It really cut down on the snack requests.

I only allow snacks on car trips. My kids do not regularly eat in the car (despite everyone swearing I would let them). We have done puffs because I think they crumble less than other snacks. I have also sat back there and spoon fed hummus and peanut butter.

Ugh. Really, anything can be messy. I'm in the gummy bear/fruit roll up camp. Anything that makes crumbs will have to be vacuumed up. Apple slices work and won't stain like blueberries. Cheese sticks are good. Pretty much what everyone else has said.
