  • What to do for DH's classmate

    Hello,

DH found out one of his classmates was hit by a car during a bike race last week. (I don't know how that happens....) He was helicoptered to the ICU. I don't know his current status. A Kickstarter was created to donate for his medical bills. Not to be judgmental, but we know he has health insurance because you have to have it in med school. But then maybe they won't pay for his helicopter ride so okay. I was wondering if you have any other ideas of how we could show our support to him, his wife and future child. I thought about making them a meal or sending flowers. School starts next week so DH could get his classmates to make him a poster or something. Those were my ideas, any others are appreciated. Thanks.

I think a meal would be great - one less thing for them to worry about! You could also set up something like a meal train (mealtrain.com) to see if other people wanted to send food.

I'd probably still donate $$$, if that's what's being asked for. Depending on his condition, this may change his entire career path. The money might not be needed for medical bills, but could help his family in other important ways. Especially if he ends up having to postpone residency (aka making some money rather than just spending it) due to being out of class.

Yikes! I think people like Kickstarter/GoFundMe because donating money is a really easy way to show your support. If someone really needed a meal I would do that, but I am not the world's best cook and I don't really enjoy it, so cooking extra kind of stresses me out.

All that being said, a meal or grocery drop off would be very helpful. Since is wife is probably exhausted from the stress of it all (on top of being pregnant), maybe a few people could chip in for a house cleaning service or go over there and tidy up a bit so she has somewhere relaxing to come home to? Depending on how far they live from the hospital (which admittedly probably isn't far given that he's a student), an Amex gift card to help with parking fees, gas, and cafeteria food/coffee would be cool. Even with insurance, all the periphery expenses can really add up.

Yeah, with a helicopter ride and ICU, I'm betting there will still be some significant expenses despite insurance, but it's OK if you don't want to contribute financially. Even if the coinsurance is like 90%/10% that could still mean thousands of dollars for that kind of hospital stay depending on their OOP limit. Food is a good call though. I wouldn't bother with token stuff like flowers, they probably need help more than gestures.

That was here, right? Velosano? If so, I'd imagine the Kickstarter would get lots of support from people on social media. The accident was all over the news.

I would definitely think a meal or food would very thoughtful.

Yes that one. Oh I didn't realize it was all over the news... just googled it. Looks like they almost reached the goal! Ok I will make a meal then!

My pick is for food. A meal that freezes well is often very practical in my experience.

Have they found the driver yet? The article I read make said the cyclist failed to yield to traffic. You'd think that a car would sustain quite a bit of damage making the accident hard to conceal.

Yes, both driver and cyclists were charged. Cyclist with something minor, driver with several counts, mostly failure to stop. Driver called 911 but kept driving.

Oh good. I hope the cyclist makes a full and speedy recovery!
