  • What is Your Proposal Story? ️

As I excitedly wait a very special occasion this morning where I help my brother propose to his girlfriend I can't help but reminisce on when DF proposed to me.

I thought it would be a fun thing to chat about so how did your proposal happen??

We had a romantic anniversary dinner, which I had organised as I feared DF would forget with all the study. Once we were back home he gave me a handwritten letter, as this was commonplace for us, except this one contained his proposal. He busied himself in another room to allow me to read it but he was so excited and nervous that he came back all sheepish looking before I had actually got to the proposal part it was rather adorable.

Aw, that's cute. I hope the proposal you're helping with goes well!

What a fun idea for a conversation -- I will try to formulate mine into a semi-interesting but not-too-wordy story later on when I have a little time.

It went off without a hitch (pardon the pun). I look forward to hearing about yours 😊

Oh can you tell us about it?

DH gave me an Easter basket on Easter morning. The plastic eggs were numbered. Each one had a sweet message in it. Finally he gave me one of those singing hallmark bunnies holding an egg. Inside the egg was my ring. It took me a second to notice the ring as the egg was opening and closing... and that's when I realized he was on one knee.

I knew it was coming. DrK had been talking about getting married for months, staring about 3 or 4 months after we met. Way to soon for me. He asked me about rings and grumbled because he didn't understand that diamond engagement rings are the norm and thought kneeling was dorky. Then my brother and his wife told him how she had sarcastically rejected my brother's original marriage proposal because she didn't realize he was sincere when he proposed without a ring and without kneeling. (The ground was wet and he had said something like "how about spending the next 70 years together" to which she replied "naaaa.") After that, DrK told me that his proposal would be unambiguous; he'd get down on both knees.

He'd been to see my father (from whom I'm estranged), discussed it with his parents, and designed a ring with my mother (who designs fine jewelry). She and DrK were supposed to keep it a secret but they kept slipping. Mom would say something like "I didn't know DrK spoke Spanish" and I'd ask when that happened. Then she'd get flustered and say never mind and try to change the subject by asking me a clumsy question about my preference in diamond settings. My mom was kind of irritated that he'd asked for my father's blessing but not hers. Then, when he picked up the finished ring from her he practiced his proposal on her -- how to kneel, how to open the box, etc. She was charmed.

I totally knew it was coming. When he popped the question, we were on a trip together for his cousin's wedding. He'd made our reservation at a hotel on the beach, away from the rest of the wedding guests (much to his family's dismay). He wanted privacy and a break from an inquiring extended family. The morning before the wedding, we went for a sunrise (east coast) walk not the beach and he proposed -- on his knees with a ring. Then we met my great-aunt, whom he had not met, for breakfast and I introduced him as my fiancé. After that, it occurred to me that I needed to tell my family. Turns out, my other brother had gotten engaged that weekend too (no ring, no kneeling). We announced our engagement to DrK's family at the rehearsal dinner which was very fun an exciting. His cousin was very gracious, included me in the wedding pictures and everything. It was overwhelming and exciting and very emotional.

Also, it turns out that my law firm announced my promotion to partner in the news paper while I was away. So when I returned to work, I was getting dozens of congratulatory phone calls and flower deliveries without knowing why. I was trying to figure out how everyone knew so quickly. It was a fun coincidence.

I was living by the sea and when R visited we headed out to listen to the waves breaking in the moonlight. Game was up because I didn't reach my jacket first, she passed it to me struggling to work out why it was heavy and clinking! 'Twas the champagne and glasses!

I suspected it was coming, since I had picked out the ring, I just didn't know for sure when he bought it and got the diamond set, since we were using my mom's original diamond. We were dating long distance at the time after college - he was working on an MS trying to get into med school again, and I was in grad school. I had gone to visit him, and instead of just staying at his mom's house, where he was living, he had suggested we get a hotel room near campus, where we had met and dated for several years. There's a suspension bridge right by the hotel where we used to go walk around when we were dating - we had gone there on our first date, and we had our first kiss there. So we went out to dinner and then he suggested we go walk around, and while we were on the bridge he got down on his knee, pulled out the ring, and said this was where we went on our first date, had our first kiss, and hopefully our first kiss as fiances, and he asked if I would marry him. So, of course I said yes.

These are all so adorably sweet. I do love a good reminisce. Particularly now during the international relationship thing

My brother was quite the romantic yesterday (and all days in fact).

My wonderful SIL and I climbed to the top of a mountain that overlooks the country on one side and the beach on the other. They had climbed it on their first date. She was totally unsuspecting but he was waiting at the top with my other sister (we were three partners in crime to pull this off without her suspecting anything).

He lead her to this little grove of trees where he had a photo slideshow and their favourite song playing. He said some beautiful words, got down on one knee, asked the question, and popped champagne. I rather sneakily videoed and photographed the entire thing. It was a special day

This is so lovely. It reminds me of our early days where we would walk around the campus and surrounding areas. So many memories tied to these places now

I also knew it was coming, as we'd been ring shopping for a few weeks. A week before he asked, my best friend texted me to tell me she'd been randomly driving downtown and saw then DB walking towards the Hustler store in the middle of the work day. Turns out he was actually walking to the jeweler.

A few days before we were at a Padres game and he started teasing me and telling me to keep my eye on the jumbotron during the seventh inning stretch. Rationally I knew he was kidding, but he teased me for hours! When the seventh inning came and went with no proposal I started crying like a CRAZY person. We were with his friends and I'm sure they thought I was insane. I wasn't sobbing or anything, but obviously had tear streaked face. To this day I am still embarrassed. It's not like I would have even enjoyed it, I'm not some huge baseball fan or anything. Ugh.

Finally we were headed on a fancy date to our favorite restaurant in San Diego, Cafe Chloe. Unbeknownst to me he'd emailed my father that week (he was in Iraq doing contract work) and asked permission. Not necessary, but sweet. My dad responded by telling him if he'd been able to put up with me this long, he could have me. I love my dad. Anyway, we were waiting for our cab to dinner and I was getting suspicious, so I kept trying to hug him and lean into him to feel a ring box and he kept trying to avoid me without hurting my feelings. "It's hot. Don't you think it's hot? Pretty warm out." He was in jeans and a sport coat and it was like 70 degrees. Not hot.

We get to the restaurant and it's totally packed. I started getting nervous that he'd not do it since there were only really public tables left that were bar height and would have made me a billion feet in the air if he got down on one knee. Thankfully a more private table opened up. We were seated, ordered wine and a cheese plate, and once the waitress disappeared he just sat there...quietly. I sat there quietly. We just kind of stared at each other. The waitress brought our wine and he had a few sips and loosened up a bit. He grabbed my hands and in an extremely pragmatic reason started listing out everything he loved about me. Like, seriously, a list. As though he were performing a geometry proof or something. My heart started racing as started shifting out of his seat and saying, "And, therefore, I think we--"

And the waitress walked up with the cheese plate. She took a lot of time explaining to us the various cheeses and such. DH looked pale and horrified, and he really likes cheese. I just sat there dumbfounded. The waitress left, and hes tarted the entire thing over. Poor guy, lol.

Finally he was able to say, "And, therefore, I think we should spend the rest of our lives together." He got down on one knee and it was just so sweet and vulnerable and I loved him so much and it was still the least I'd loved him yet. I sobbed (not expecting that) and he cried a little bit and the head waiter brought over champagne. I have a sapphire ring and ironically our waitress' father was a sapphire dealer, so she inspected my ring!! Thankfully she confirmed he got a good one. She probably would have said so regardless, lol.

I love reliving that story. Even when DH is really driving me crazy it reminds me of his sweet, playful, tender side. He was able to get a copy of the menu the next day but I think it got lost in one of our moves. Our dog is named Chloe (coincidentally, we got her with that name already). We always go back and get a cheese plate whenever we're in town. <3 Great thread idea!

                              hahaha hilarious

I can just picture this. Poor guy indeed.

I laughed at the asking permission from your father part. My DF makes this AMAZING cheesecake with a gram cracker (did I spell that correctly?) base and three different filling layers with mixed berries and honey etc etc (mmmmmm yummy). Anyway he made one early on when we started dating for a family occasion. The family loved it so much and dad made a joke about it being acceptable dowry for me (great dad joke).

So nearly a year later when DF travelled to ask my fathers permission he turned up unannounced on their doorstep with the same cheesecake in hand. I thought it was adorable 😍

I was thinking a 'first date' thread could be a nice reminisce as well?!
