  • Bathing/showering Question

Read that as a culture we go waaaaaay beyond the need for cleanliness. Still, a daily shower does make me feel better. This must be the reason why I find DH's sister so odd. This 19yo girl has been at our house since Wednesday. This afternoon, while gathering guest towels/sheets (4 days later), I noticed that her towel is still in the same spot it was before she arrived. There was a used washcloth but no hand towel or bath towel. I've noticed this every time she has been to our home.

Is not showering for 4 days the new normal? I mean she is 19! I can see little ones not wanting to bathe. DH's response is "well, at least she doesn't stink"

Four days people - last time she was here it was 5! I just cannot wrap my head around that.

LOL. I was a reluctant houseguest when I was 18/19. I could see myself opting not to shower, just to save my hosts the need to wash the towel! And it wasn't unusual for me to go 3-4 days without a shower anyway, so...

Or is it possible she's using other towels that are in there? My in-laws often use the used towels that are in the guest/kids' bathroom if I am not proactive to either remove the used ones or put the new/clean ones out prominently.

Nope, she had the bathroom to herself. Only towel used was a washcloth.

Hmmm, that is so interesting to me. If I get busy working in the yard/house, I can go the day without showering but have to at some point before going to bed. Back when I was her age, I was worse...would have showered at least 2 times a day. To got to class and after workouts.

The no showering for 4-5 days is quite novel to me. It is none of my business but I so want to ask her if showering only happens on the 6,7, etc. days.

So my sister is 21 and she showers every 3 days... I just asked her and apparently it's because the dirtier the hair the better it is for styling and more natural growing??? And apparently it's the new normal.

I usually shower every other day and, on rare occasions, will go a little longer if I haven't exercised. I also only wash my hair once or twice a week. I'm just not a big sweater/oil producer and live in a dry climate. It hasn't run DH off yet .

Oh, I totally get the no hair washing. With curly hair, I do not wash ot daily. But shower - that is daily and I am also not one to sweat.

I guess it is more normal than I thought. Like I said, SIL is the only guest I've had to not shower for days.

I remember one of my friends in college telling me she didn't need to shower daily - umm, she did. I feel gross if I don't take a shower every day - I even wash my hair every day, but it's very fine and gets really greasy if I don't. I will say that I don't lather all up and use soap all over my body (I just scrub with my hands and rinse), and I actually read an article recently that said that that's now recommended.

Exact same as A. Really fine hair and working out 5 days/week means I shower probably 6x per week. And I look gross the day I don't shower. But I don't use soap at all besides shampoo unless I've been doing something muddy/unusual. I'm not usually dirty enough that water won't clean me.

I shower once or twice a day. Short ones, but after workouts and before bed. I wash my hair twice a week or so. Wash my face once or twice a day.

What's the recommendation now? No soap save for washing hair?

I shower 1-2x daily. I need to at night just to relax. But I've never used soap save for shampoo

I didn't used to use soap daily either. Then DH found out shortly after we got married and made me feel like I was some gross weirdo for not using soap. I've been embarrassed about it for years now. You guys are making me feel like I wasn't so gross after all . I shower almost everyday. Once in a while if we are really busy I'll skip a day. A while back I quit washing my hair everyday. Now I wash it every few days, but I still like the daily shower to get my day going.

I have to shower every day my hair gets so oily when I don't and I prone to lady problems lol but apparently it's the new norm. Oh and I was introduced to dry shampoo which works great sometimes too

My DW has a great natural aroma that washing destroys. Didn't Napoleon write to Josephine from a campaign, "I will return to Paris tomorrow evening. Don't wash."

This thread has shown me I'm crazy. When I was 19, I showered to wake up, worked out, showered again. Sometimes, I'd workout twice, so I'd actually shower 3 times per day. I do remember a big topic of conversation at our freshman winter break being who'd gone "Brad Pitt" (meaning shower as little as possible) in college. Four days seems really excessive to me.
