  • Miami Uber Doctor

I'm assuming most of you have seen this by now ... A fourth-year neurology resident in Miami assaulted an Uber driver, and someone posted a video of the incident on YouTube. (I say assault, but I really don't even know how to describe her behavior. You really have to watch the whole YouTube video to understand.)

    http://www.cnet.com/news/doctor-susp...uber-incident/

Now her program put her on "administrative leave." I wonder if she can get fired for this, or if this is something they can actually fire someone for? She paid the driver and he didn't press charges (although the cops were there)... Either way, this has to be SO EMBARRASSING for her residency program.
    What is wrong with people?!?

I haven't seen the video, but I have read the articles. Is it attention seeking behavior on her part (you described it as indescribable, but assault like), or is it somehow muted (like someone under the influence)?

I mean... she's freaking insane. That's my interpretation. 😉 In the clip I saw, she knee'd the driver in the groin, smashed his iPhone, threw things out of his car–all because he wouldn't drive her, because she wasn't the person who ordered the car! I assume you'd have to be on something to act like that, but the general consensus on other sites seems to be that she's just extremely entitled.
(I think the whole video is embedded in the link I posted.)

Like the Taco Bell exec who said "I'm not usually like this" after beating the crap out of another Uber driver? Beyond frightening!

yup, she should be suspended and kick out the program. she should know better - whether drunk or on drugs. either way, she should know better. i doubt this is the first time it happen to her. i heard people get into trouble for less stuff tan this (like proscribing antibiotics to family) or following up on former patients (hipaa violation)

It totally depends on the program. There's a certain very well regarded program, where a sorority sister trained. She used to show up to work still drunk from the night before. She was never written up, saw patients, and was made chief resident. At my DH's program, a classmate was fired because he just didn't progress well. There's definitely no standard for how programs handle situations. I don't think she's insane. I think she's a bad drunk and doesn't realize there are cameras everywhere.

No charges brought? How much did she pay the driver!?

And if she doesn't get fired. I imagine she'll have a tough time getting a job.

I always Google my doctors. Can you imagine what her google results will be? Heck, even her dad's info (also a neurologist in FL) popped up immediately when I googled her name. I don't see how you could recover professionally from something like this these days.

Honestly, it would probably be better to come out and say: I'm taking a leave of absence to deal with alcohol issues and then come back in a year completely sober. That might help redeem the situation.

I agree with T&S. It sucks to have one stupid incident ruin your whole career. I think if she took some time and dealt with her issues, she should be given a chance to continue in the program.

I'm inclined to agree, but the fact that Univ. of Miami and Jackson Health System had to put out a formal statement about the incident makes me think she's probably getting fired. It's one thing to mess up privately, but to embarrass the hospital on such a large scale...I don't see how you come back from that.
To me, this is WAY beyond drunken antics. We've all gotten drunk and said dumb stuff. This isn't that. BUT, I just don't know how the hospital could fire her without there being any police report, charges, etc. Is embarrassing the hospital enough grounds for termination?

Just because she wasn't charged with a crime doesn't mean she didn't commit one. Didn't see the video but it sounds like at the very least she committed battery and disorderly conduct.

Isn't there usually some sort of "morality" type clause? As in don't be an asshole even off duty?

DrK has had co-residents in his program leave to deal with personal mental health issues. Once, he responded to a code on his co-resident who was having a seizure on the ward. She was anorexic and bulimic. There have been others too. It might be more frequent in psychiatry residencies. Psych is one area where doctors are expected to have had some treatment/psychoanalysis themselves. In fact, to be an analyst, you have to have completed analysis yourself and many psych residency programs require their residents to see a psychiatrist regularly just because their work can be so disturbing.

Without knowing her history all I can say is really sad and pathetic. I suspect there is some psych and / or substance abuse issues. After watching the video, I would not blame the program from firing her.
