Is anyone else into genealogy? I've been working on mine and DrK's for about 7 years and I get crazy excited about things like visiting cemeteries or finding someone's old jello recipe. Anyone else? Or do I bore you to death with my genealogy raves?

I've got several family members and friends into it. My mom's friend did all of hers, and stepMIL is doing all of hubby's, so I feel like I don't really need to at this point.

Me! I would spend SO much more time on it if I could. And pay for professionals to help with finding the Irish stuff on my paternal grandfather's side. And also have them confirm all of my hard work 😉

My aunt and uncle were on the Philly episode of Genealogy Roadshow. I was hugely pregnant and didn't go, and now I wish I had. My aunt is also super into genealogy and she got me into it too.

I also just sent away my National Geographic DNA kit, a Christmas gift from my ILs. Should get it back in 8 weeks or so. Can't wait to see what kind of cool things it reveals!

I've never looked into it. My grandfather was adopted and I struggle with do I research the family who adopted him or go the blood route and research the family who gave him up?

My colleague did a DNA test. Not sure which company she went through, but it does generalize "Eastern European". I think it reinforced that she is really Polish - like 98%.

I would totally be interested in starting this for myself. I would really want to know since I'm Hispanic with red hair, semi Asian eyes and a German maiden last name. Where would I start to look?

Eta: it is said that my grandmothers, grandfather on my moms side is Chinese. And my grandma on my dads side says her father was German but only knows his name. Just doesn't know location. Oh and my family is from Central America so we aren't Mexican

You reminded me to look into this again! It would be really neat to find out more, especially some stories like you have!
My mom has done some a few years ago. DH says his aunt did a bunch on ancestry.com

In your case, I'd start with interviewing relatives. Get as much information as you can, names, dates, locations. That will help you find a jumping off point.

Even if the information isn't exact, anything they can tell you helps. My grandmother couldn't remember the exact spelling of her paternal grandmother's maiden name. But she knew her first name and where they lived. Once I could connect the dots with census records, it led me to discover several generations, including ancestors who arrived on the Mayflower.

So anything is helpful and better than nothing! Good luck 😀

I just got a text from my 2nd cousin with whom I've been doing family research. She says the newspaper wants to do an article about our Jewish cowboy ancestors.

My grandma has told me her dads name. And I know my great grandma name. My mom side is no help whatsoever

DW's folks into genealogy big time. Our 10 yearly census and lots of other records are online now, for a fee, but you can get great results. If close I'll pop over and photograph locations.

Write down everything you know. Is it just a couple names? Your grandparents' names? Birthdates? Cities where they may have lived? Where they are buried?

My dad got into this when he retired. I believe he's managed to map the family tree back to the early 1700s, which is quite cool.

Lucky to have genealogist relatives on both sides of my tree. Traced back to the 1700s and uploaded on ancestry. I've inherited so many photos I'm trying to scan in and add to the files. It's fun. Both sides of my family have been in the U.S. since before the Revolution, so it's all domestic research.

Now, poor hubby is a different story. Grandparents are the children of Ellis island immigrant except the one that "snuck in" as a crew member on a ship to Florida when he was 13. The trail runs cold as soon as we hop the Atlantic. I'd love to trace his family better.

Have no personal experience but a friend told me that she got more info when she paid for an ancestry type of company that did her DNA testing.
Finally - we are finished with training! Hello real world!!
