What would you do? I notify the credit card company and shred the card. It's probably a hassle for whomever lost the card but I figure the credit card company would make them do that for a lost card anyway. If I attempt to find them, I wouldn't know if I had the right person or just someone with the same name.

So, I did that today. And now the cardholder is pissed at me....

I found the card in the parking lot outside the UPS store. I mentioned it to the manager of the store when I picked up my mail and told him what I planned to do. He agreed that I should do that. Minutes after I shredded the card per the cc company's instructions, he called to tell me that someone came into his store looking for the card. She was totally pissed that I did that. He said she was cussing him out and demanding my phone number. He refused to give her my name or number.

We turn in to the police department. They deal with the ID verification if the owner claims it.

Yeah, having it get used is just the same annoyance as having it get destroyed for you. Try not to get too attached to your card -- it's the company who's SOL when fraud happens, usually not you. (Yesterday the cashier at the grocery store told me "it's for your protection" when she asked for my ID on a credit card purchase. I told her, "It's for my card company's protection, and my inconvenience." I still gave her my ID though. )

But if it gets used too much before you catch wind of it being missing, you're still liable for some of the charges, so it's still a good thing for someone to not let it get stolen. And in particular, calling the credit card company and following their instructions was 100% the right thing to do. I empathize with being upset that someone is upset with you, but you're good. I'd let it go, really.
