What is important when looking for a new job?

We never really experienced job hunting because
after residency due to health issue that rocked our family we just packed and moved back home where our family lived (big mistake but that's another story) and DH applied to a couple hospitals in the area worked for the hospital for a year and then went independent...
Now for several reasons we are job hunting but we are so lost!

It can depend a lot on the specialty, and what he's looking for (academic, private, contract, employed?), and can depend on the location as well; in general, malpractice and tail is important. Knowing what other benefits/coverages are provided is good (they don't have to provide them, but the pay should be higher if they don't). Depending on the location, non-compete clauses can be an issue (and some places it's debatable if they're even enforceable). If you've got a contract to look at, having someone look it over would be good (there are services, or you can retain a contract attorney). Any specific questions?

Job hunt

What specialty? Private or academic? How broad is your search? Do you want to live in a certain area of the country? Some people cold call for jobs, others use websites and some use a recruiter. It really depends on the specialty or your priorities.

A good general piece of advice is to look at job hunting with three prongs 1) dream job/conditions/hours 2) highest paying or 3) location

Pick ONE which is most important to you and your family and start searching that way.

This is a solid strategy. Or even make a pie chart out of them. Ours would probably have been 50% location, 40% conditions, 10% pay (and that part shows in the end, haha).

We were also limited by subspecializing. Being a hospitalist should give you lots of options, making it all the more important to narrow down your priorities in advance.
