  • I think Southern Living is trolling me

I have been a loyal Southern Living Subscriber for 8 years now (I'm 28...I started in college)--I read it cover to cover every month. Before I went to college, I read my mother's copy. The first fall issue of the year is one of my favorite days.

I really, really love this magazine.

Over the years, there have been some questionable design features...the household with young children that featured plain concrete blocks and coffee tables. The 80s inspired wall paper feature.

But you guys (or should I say, "y'all?"), this takes the cake. I'm not sure it's real. How could anything be this bad? (though I do like the master bath)

Enjoy! (Don't miss the bright green kitchen!)

I've been reading Southern Living since I could read, and I'm not going to lie, I LOVE this house. I think Southern style should mix the traditional and eccentric. I hate it when the Idea Houses don't include any new ideas! I've actually been thinking about painting my kitchen cabinets emerald green though, so there's my crazy bias showing through.

The bright green kitchen with painted ceiling! Did you also notice all the beautiful glass front cabinets with curtains inside? They're in multiple rooms.

Me too!!! A design magazine SHOULD push the envelope!! When everything is "subdivision model homes" its a yawn. The kitchen is so fun! Would it be good for resale? Not so much but it shows what colorful cabinets could add to the space, even if you just do them on the bottom. I used to want to have a fabric ceiling like that in my dining room...then reality set in and I realized it would be crazy expensive and a pita to clean, lol.

The exterior and interior of the home are interesting juxtapositions. You wouldn't think they would "go" but they do.

It's really weird. Some rooms are nice and others are awful. What's with all the green? My style is transitional so we have a mixture of contemporary and traditional. There are far nicer ways of doing it. And talk about killing your resale value with all that wallpaper!

I love it too! I am a total sucker for mixed patterns/textures though. I did hate fabric ceiling, and there was one piece of artwork that I would donate to goodwill, but I would totally live there!

Honestly, I'm surprised! I guess it just isn't my style.

This is my absolute favorite house they have featured, but half of it is the exterior/lot it is on

It's a bit overdone. There are too many "ideas" being implemented at once so it's hard to focus on any single feature in many of the rooms and it feels overwhelming. But I don't see 70s. I see a lot of mid-century modern which is late 60s/early 70s together with elements from other decades. I could see many of the ideas working in moderation, but not all together.

Green kitchens like that belong in tropical houses, think the Keys.
I wouldn't do that style, in that color, in that house. 😄

It's just so dark. And so green! So very very green.
