You're not crazy -- stranger things have happened. ❤️

They are fast tracking a vaccine and working diligently, which is great.
Additionally, it *seems* to be that the greatest risk is maternal active infection during the first trimester (I suspect during neural tube development), and late infection in 2nd/3rd trimesters is not causal.

I know I'm Northeast and shouldn't worry either but I do. And I'm already worried about our future second child in a couple years even as I carry our unborn first haha!

So this town is only 2.5 hours from where I live. Mosquitos are still VERY active here. My pregnant niece is planning to visit for Christmas. Should I be worried for her? She's in the first week of her second trimester.

I would not go anywhere with Zika while pregnant. Especially that early. If you still have active mosquitos, I would not take the risk.

I second this. While it's "here", it's not active in our county yet. We are avoiding going anywhere with active cases, and I am not pregnant.

[MENTION=1310]MDPhDWife[/MENTION] Can't be too careful, I agree with T&S and thirteen. Definitely let her know so she can make the decision for herself. If she does come, just avoid heavy mosquito times of day and areas (dawn/dusk, standing water), long sleeves/pants, if she doesn't like DEET then getting a natural repellent, etc etc.

Short answer: They don't know if there's a safe time during pregnancy to travel to an area with Zika or not.

I talked to my sister (her mom) about it this morning. What would be considered an area with Zika? I looked at the maps on the CDC page and they have the entire US as orange. Then the US map has different shades of blue to indicate how prevalent Zika is in each state. This niece travelled to Jacksonville, FL for Thanksgiving, and FL seems to be worse than Texas.

I don't know officially but I would consider active cases within 2 hours drive to be too close for comfort. Ultimately it's really up to her.

DH is going to Miami in Jan. We will be taking 6 months of precautions (we are not planning on conceiving in that time anyway).

To my knowledge, no active cases of mosquito transmission that far north.
It's sad because while I would like to go down to Miami and visit the Keys again, no way.
