Tell me about Prime/Ruku/Netflix/Hulu TV

Thinking about cutting the chord but IDK the details or what I need to do. We have 2 televisions with AT&T U Verse now. The neighborhood is getting Google fiber and I think we areswitching out Internet and landline.

We cut the cable last year. Do you already have a Roku or an Apple TV? We have an Apple TV and a Mohu HDTV antenna, plus a subscription to Netflix. We use my parents' online cable login to get access to HBO, Showtime, CNN, USA Network, and many other channels through the Apple TV. I watch local news with the antenna, and it's 100% clear.
Before you get rid of cable, you might want to think about what TV shows you like watching now and how you'll access them. DH has found ways to watch all his live sports, but it's through a combination of a lot of different paid and unpaid apps and services. I like a lot of Bravo shows, and to watch those I have to pull them up on my laptop (through the Bravo website or the Comcast app) and plug my laptop into the TV.

Ugh. That sounds complicated. We don't have roku/apple/Hulu/Netflix....none of it. We have small kids so it's mostly PBS kids programs and Disney Jr with a PG movie here and there. Neither of us have much time for TV. I tend to discover series about 6 seasons in and then binge watch dvds from the library or on the computer via Amazon prime. I don't think DrK watches tv at all.

If you've got Amazon prime, I recommend the fire TV.

Do you have a smart tv? If you do you do not need a roku or Apple TV device. We have been streaming first with a Roku then a smart tv for 6 or so years. I think there are pbs apps and a lot of pbs is on Netflix. I honestly think a roku is easier to navigate than a smart tv but it's not really hard either way. The best part is avoiding adds. I'd suggest Netflix and think you will have whatever you need with that.

We don't have a TV but my parents have a Roku with Netflix and they like it. They are not very good with technology but don't have any problems. We have have prime mostly for the free shipping but watch some things and they have pbs shows. Our kids also watch the pbs app on tablets. I think prime and netflix seem to have a lot of the same things with the exception of their original shows. Like you I am not a big TV person and I can wait to get dvds from the library when I am interested. I am usually watching stuff a year or two behind but I do not mind. The kids also love to get movies from the library.

I don't think you will miss cable. Between Amazon Prime and Netflix, we have plenty to watch.

We utilize the PlayStation 4 in the living room and I have a Roku for our bedroom. We also have kindle fire tablets. We have an Apple TV, but it started having issues and I stopped using it.

The kids watch random shows from all sorts of places. They've actually never experienced live tv...

DH binge watches all sorts of crap.

I rarely watch TV and focus on working my way through seasons of shows I actually care about as I have time

Sling is also popular if you want access to live sports programming without the cable price tag.

ITA - We have not missed cable. Did not get it when we moved here 3 yrs ago and still don't see a need for it. Every now and then DH gets frustrated with not getting a game but other than that we are pleased. We have a smart TV in one room, a roku on another tv, and the Amazon fire on another. I like the Fire over the Roku but I mostly watch Amazon Prime free stuff and we do pay for Hulu.

For what you described, it sounds like you wouldn't miss cable much. I agree with figuring out what you want your tv for before making the decision. For us the big holdup is live sports. Even that is improving, and we may be getting close to cutting cords. Although the way our tv and internet is currently bundled, I'm not sure it would be very cost effective.

Smart tvs are pretty easy to use with the main streaming services. We also have an old chromecast, and while it's occasionally useful, it's much more of a hassle.
