  • Halloween logistics?

Surely I'm not the only medspouse who's running the show alone tonight. It's been years since I had to (DH worked a night shift last year so he could do the evening stuff, and he was off the year before.) I suddenly realized I don't know how I'll handle it.

I guess we will go out trick-or-treating around 5:30 when the day starts to dim. We'll walk around for about 30-45 minutes. But what about dinner? I guess I will do something that I can make fast, and serve it kind of late. And we just won't light pumpkins or turn on porch lights until we are home and eating?

How do you do it in your house?

    Anyway, off to carve pumpkins...

This year I'm working so DH is doing it alone for the first time. Left a cheese/cracker plate for snacking (protein) while dressing, corndogs for dinner, we're leaving candy at the door while he walks the two littlest kids around (olders are with friends) and then the Js are handing out candy once they get home (AKA when they have more than enough candy for sanity).

We got lucky. DH is in nights but didn't have to leave until 8:15 so he got to come with us. Aunties and Uncles tag along too

First year in the new house; DH worked till 3, so he was home in plenty of time. There was a bit of panic when T0Ters started showing up at 5:15pm, and DH talked to a neighbor who said "last year, we got like 300 kids"

We hadn't thought to ask before; I'd gotten a bag of like 150 pieces, but that was obviously not going to cut it.

DH handled the first hour while I went to the grocery store (we needed to go anyway), and got some more candy. We won't run out, but we'll give away the vast majority of it. We microwaved leftovers when I got home, and scarfed bites between doorbell rings. It's gotta be tough with kids and only one parent home!

Dh is on call. Of course I didn't know it until tonight. He doesn't get called in a lot so our plan was he would man the house giving out candy and I'd go out around the neighborhood with O. Well about 30min before trick or treating started he got called. He had to go operate on an awful case and still isn't home. O and I trick or treated then when we got home, we turned on the lights and started handing out candy. It was fun overall.

I should have known it was much ado about nothing. We went out from 5:30 to 6:10 or so. (This seemed to be pretty early, but a good few neighbors were ready for us.) I wore a ridiculous clown wig and mostly stood on the street and let the kids take the initiative of choosing houses and knocking on doors. We turned on our pumpkins and lights when we got home. We had a grand total of three rings on our doorbell before we blew out the pumpkins and turned out the lights at 10 minutes to 8. There are a bunch of kids who come through our neighborhood, they just don't venture down our hidden driveway unless they know us! Which is fine by me. I had only bought one small bag of Fun Size Three Musketeers, so we don't have a huge excess of candy.

All's well that ends well. I just hope there were no holiday crazies at the hospital for DH!

Ack, I need to roast the pumpkin seeds still!

DH is on call with a full ICU so I was doubtful he would make it home. I had dinner ready at 5:15 and he texted to say he'd be home in time for trick or treating at 6. I had costumes on the boys and we were taking pictures when he walked in at 5:58. I couldn't believe it! We all went trick or treating to a few of our neighbors houses then DH and C manned the door. I was so glad as I'd been worried about how to answer the door while feeding the baby! We all had a lot of fun. Sometimes it works out when you least expect it!

Dh was on call but it's home call. He wore the pager and had a 4 back him up but it didn't go off which was nice. The 4 was kind of a jerk and was like, I expect you to cover a Friday or Saturday night for me if I get called in. Thanks dude, hope you get over yourself when you have kids...

DH Is on h&n and didn't get home until 1am. Little man and I posted up in the driveway and passed out candy. Without dad I'm not sure I could have convinced him to walk around without his bike haha. Maybe next year?

The tradition in Scotland is called guising. Kids have to sing a song, tell a joke kind of thing to earn treats. I was working but 1 lot of kids came to station before I went to an armed siege for rest of evening. Borrowing a stab vest wasn't the costume I intended.

Glad you came off the call safe and sound. That's so sweet that the station was stocked with treats for the kids!
