How important is Step 2?

My bf got his step 2 scores last week and is really disappointed. He passed, but was below the mean, and he had expected to do much better.

If he applies for a fellowship later, will this be an important factor?

I'm not entirely sure, but I can say that my husband didn't do stellar on any of his board exams and he was accepted into the fellowship of his choice, which was kind of competive. It did help him that he pursued a fellowship at the hospital he did residency at, so they were familiar with him and his clinical skills were enough to override his board exams. If he had been trying to get into another program, it might have been more of an issue.
